The Burke name has long been regarded as a symbol of trust and
confidence. We promise that arrangements will be carried out
in the most exact and respectful manner, in accordance with the
wishes of the deceased and the survivors, regardless of
nationality, creed, or financial circumstances. It is our
privilege to serve the families of this area with the utmost
of care and respect.
Mr. Burke Sr. was an accomplished carpenter and cabinetmaker in
the area and was called upon to build and line coffins for burial
purposes. The interest and service provided evolved into an appreciation
for caring for the deceased and thus the natural evolution from
coffin maker to undertaker. As well known and respected members
of their community, the Burkes took pride and satisfaction in providing
their attention to detail and professionalism in serving families
of the area. The firm maintained an office, showroom and parlors
at 451, 457 and 465 Broadway and following World War Two, acquired
the current funeral home at 628 North Broadway.
Mr. Richard D. Stone, a Glens Falls native, became associated with the funeral home in 1947 and a full partner with James Burke in 1972. Under his guidance, the firm continued its commitment of service and long and faithful public service. Dick Stone was a pillar of civic, youth and community support to the area for many years and upon Mr. Burke’s passing in 1987, he became sole owner and operator until his untimely passing in 1990. Ownership was under Mr. Stone’s widow, Barbara Stone until her passing in 2003.
The funeral home is owned and operated by long time funeral directors Mark Phillips and Thomas Armer. In September of 2001, the firm acquired the local 60-year-old firm of Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Home and merged the two funeral homes into operation at 628 North Broadway.
