Saratoga Springs, NY - Alfred Leo ("Pete") Dolan passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at the Wesley Health Care Center, Lawrence St. He was 96. Born on Sept. 22, 1914 in New Milford, CT, he was the son of the late James Leo and Jessie Elizabeth (Breaux) Dolan and a former Florida resident. He attended New York University and was a US Army Air Corps veteran of World War Two. He served as a corporal with the 1050th Base unit in the American Theater of Operations and was honorably discharged in 1946. Pete worked for many years as a steward for Harry M. Stevens, overseeing and managing operations for food concessions at several US tracks and the three New York Racing Association ovals. An ardent and knowledgeable thoroughbred horse racing fan, he enjoyed many summers at the Saratoga Race Course. He enjoyed meeting friends after the races at various Saratoga establishments, including the Wishing Well and Pennell's and was always seen at The Parting Glass on St. Patrick's Day. Pete looked forward to each racing season and as recent as last year spent several days with his friends at the track. Sitting with Pete on the second floor of the Saratoga Clubhouse afforded everyone an opportunity to meet and talk with a steady stream of people that stopped for a quick hello and chat. Everyone knew Pete, from NYRA's board chairman to daily track patrons. A member of the Church of St. Peter, he was a faithful and devout communicant for many years at the Sunday 9am Liturgy since residing in Saratoga Springs in 1994. In keeping with his Catholic faith, he didn't attend races on Sundays! As a great story teller with a sharp wit, he created and wrote some poetry and enjoyed taking road trips to Vermont. A die-hard Boston Red Sox fan, he enjoyed giving grief to any New York Yankee fan whenever he could. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three siblings, Frances and twins Jessie and Paul Dolan. He is survived by several cousins, including Paula A. and her husband Bill Eaton and family of Edison, NJ, and many warmhearted caring, beloved friends. Relatives and friends may call from 8 to 9am Saturday morning, July 30, 2011 in the Chapel of the Church of St. Peter, 241 Broadway. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9am Saturday in the Church of St. Peter, by the Rev. John D. Kirwin.
