Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Alfred Joseph Scavuzzo of Saratoga Springs passed away Friday, Sept. 7, 2012. He was 77. Born on March 27, 1935 in the Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late Nathan and Christine (DiPietro) Scavuzzo and was brother of the late Joseph R. Scavuzzo. Residing for many years in Massachusetts, he graduated from Quincy High School with the class of 1952. He served his country in the US Navy on a LSD (Landing Ship Dock) in the Mediterranean during the Korean War. Employed as a purchaser for both General Dynamics and Morrison Knudsen, he settled in Saratoga Springs in the mid 1970's. With his wife Virginia, they became co-owners of Scavuzzo's Bakery on Grand Avenue for many years and he also worked at Roohan Realty on Broadway for several years. An active member and past president of the Ballston Spa Senior Citizens, Al enjoyed the club's bowling and chorus. In his youth, he participated in baseball and golf, and also enjoyed music, especially playing his banjo. He was a Past Commander of Dominick Smaldone Post 35 ITAM (Italian American War Veterans), a member and Past Exalted Ruler, serving from 1989-1990, of Saratoga-Wilton B.P.O. Elks Lodge 161 and honored to have been selected as a former Elk of the Year. As an avid golfer, he enjoyed being a member of the Saratoga Knights of Columbus Tuesday golf league at Brookhaven for several years. Survivors include his sons, Michael and Joseph Scavuzzo; his daughter, Christine (Kevin) Morrisey; his grandchildren, Stephen Stankiewicz and Stacey (Ryan) Pacer; his wife, Virginia "Ginny" and her children, Jude Mooney (Bill) Fricano, John Mooney, Maureen Mooney (Tony) Ferradino and Ginny's grandchildren, Elizabeth Grace Fricano and Gianni Antonio Ferradino. He is also survived by his good friends Barbara Sylvain, Joan Dreher and Diane Falco, along with many others. Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 7pm Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing and Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway 584-5373. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9am Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012 in the Church of St. Peter, 241 Broadway, by the Rev. Dominic S. Ingemie, pastor. Burial with military honors will follow at 10:30am at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville. Memorials may be made to ITAM Post 35, Grand Avenue, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 or to the American Diabetes Association, 7 Washington Square, Albany, NY 12205.
