Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Alice Lucille DeMatteo passed away peacefully Saturday (April 4, 2009) at her home, with her loving family by her side. She was 83. Born on July 6, 1925 in Schuylerville, NY, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Agnes (McQuian) Squires. Alice served in the US Navy as an apprentice Seaman first class, receiving her honorable discharge in 1945. She worked for several years at the Division St. School in the cafeteria and at Saratoga Bowl running the day care center. Alice was a past member of the Dominick-Smaldone Post #35 ITAM Ladies Auxiliary and the Principessa Elena Women's Society. She was very dedicated to her family and friends and was a loving and giving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband of over 50 years, Jeremiah Joseph DeMatteo, her brothers Charles, Malcolm and Donald, her step-son, Augustus Barody and her granddaughter JoAnn Barody Sarro. Survivors include her daughters, Alice Furey-Holland (John), Geri DuMortier (Ricky Falcon); step-daughter Kathy Monroe (David); brother Robert Squires (Frances); sister-in-law Kate Squires and brother-in-law Augustus DeMatteo. Alice was a devoted grandmother to her grandchildren, George DuMortier (Stacey Brisco), Charles Furey III (Jennifer), Timothy Furey (Gina Young), Meghan Furey, Katie Reeves, Desiree Sloan (Louis), Carol Ann Barody, Kimberly Elm (Stephen) and Janiere Taylor (Chris) and her great-grandchildren, Jeremy and Jillian Furey, Robert (R.J.) Furey, Tyresse Reeves, Grayson and Braylon DuMortier, Jaden Sloan, William and Nicki Sarro and Katelyn and David Elm; many nieces and nephews and her lifelong best friend, Florence DeGregorio. A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 11am Thursday at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Rd., Schuylerville, NY. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. The family extends a special and heartfelt thank you to Dr. Desmond DelGiacco, Dr. Paul Okosky, Saratoga Hospice and Rev. Neil Draves-Arpaia. Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes of 628 North Broadway (583-5373).
