Obituary

Allen L. Mossman, formerly of Saratoga Springs, passed away peacefully at Loudonville Enhanced Care Residence on May 17, 2022, at age 95.

Al was born on February 11, 1927, in Tarrytown, NY, to Dorothy and Joseph Mossman. Prior to moving to Saratoga Springs in 1991, he and his wife, Judith, married July 20, 1952, resided in New Jersey, where they raised four children.

Al graduated with honors in 1949 from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering, and received a Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1951. He worked for General Electric in Schenectady for two years in the research and development of special insulations for motors and generators, then left to pursue a career with Matheson Gas Products, Inc. of East Rutherford, NJ. Al worked in various phases of the business, and was President of the company from 1967 to 1983. During his career he was an active member of the Compressed Gas Association, and became the association's President in 1978.

After retiring from Matheson, Al worked as an independent consultant specializing in compressed gas safety. He served as a safety consultant to the National Welding Supply Association from 1985 to 1994, preparing safety bulletins and giving lectures, as well as working directly with the association's members, providing safety education and programs. Al consulted for lawyers and in court as an expert witness in chemical accident cases.

After fully retiring in 2005, Al and Judy spent much of every year traveling, visiting family, friends, and sites all over the world. Wherever they went, they made new friends. Al and Judy were much beloved by so many!

Al was an active member of Temple Sinai, serving as the Chairman of the Cemetery Committee for six years. He was one of the original founders of the Havurah Vatik (elder friends) organization, working as a Co-Chairman for about five years and then as a member of the Planning Committee.

After joyfully picking up the violin again at age 70, Al took lessons, practiced regularly, and was proud to be a violinist in the Skidmore orchestra for five years. He also played for several years in the Music Company Orchestra. Al continued to take every opportunity to make music for and with friends up until the last few months of his life.

Among his major joys in life was his wife, family, music, sailing, tennis and skiing. He was active well into his 90s, sticking to cross-country skiing after declaring that downhill skiing was starting to feel a bit risky.

Al is survived by his children and their spouses: Margery and Paul Chessare of Greenfield Center, NY; Ralph Mossman and Mary Mullaney of Driggs, ID; Ken Mossman and Danielle Grassi of Wilton, NY; and Ellen Mossman and Dave Bomberg of Richmond, CA. Al has five grandsons, Geoffrey, Christopher and Michael Mina, Daniel Chessare, and Cai Mossman, and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a younger sister, Joy Balfour, of Upper Montclair, NJ.

Al's family members are incredibly grateful for all the years they had with Al, a man of generosity, kindness, and endless optimism, lovingly known as Owl. We want to thank the nurses, doctors and aides at Loudonville Enhanced Care, who provided heartfelt care during his final journey.

Contributions in Al Mossman's memory may be sent to Temple Sinai, Saratoga Springs, Saratoga Hospital, or Community Hospice, Albany.

A graveside burial service will be held at noon on Friday, May 20, at the Temple Sinai section of the Beth El Cemetery on Rte. 32 in Moreau, NY, with a memorial service to follow at a yet-to-be determined date.
