Saratoga Springs, NY - Anthony P. McCarthy of 54 Wright Street passed away Monday, March 28, 2011 in his home with his family at his side. Born on Aug. 15, 1932 at 17 South Franklin Street in Saratoga Springs, NY, he was the youngest of eight children born to the late Michael and Elena (Etes) McCarthy. A 1950 graduate of Saratoga Springs High School, he entered the US Air Force and served during the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge he returned home to Saratoga and worked as a construction foreman for Johnson Kiewit. In 1964 he was involved with the construction of the Saratoga Springs Holiday Inn on Broadway and remained on as Chief Engineer until the sale of the hotel in 1981. He later joined Callanan Industries where he was employed for 14 years and was a member of Schenectady Labor Local 157. He retired in 1999. Tony was proud of his family's Italian heritage and growing up in Saratoga's "Dublin" neighborhood, he got his first job working at Dehn's Flowers and Greenhouse. It was here that he developed an uncanny and life-long ability to nurture, resurrect and restore listless or abandoned plants and flowers to a state of full vitality and vibrance. He was adept at repairing virtually anything that was broken. He was an excellent cook. He had a passion for great music, classic movies, travel excursions, and long, story-filled meals with friends and family. He loved life and he lived a full, rich life, a life he deeply loved and fought hard to sustain. And his legacy for living life to its fullest is certain to endure with all of his loved ones. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Catherine Barney and Mary McCarthy and two brothers, James "Pucky" and Michael McCarthy. Survivors include his wife of over 52 years, Elizabeth McMahon McCarthy, whom he married on June 21, 1958; two sons and daughters-in-law, Anthony P. and Hiroko McCarthy of London, UK and John M. and Lynda McCarthy of Franklin, MA; five grandchildren, Leah Elizabeth, Sara Elena, Aya Stephanie, Bradley Ryan and Emi Claire McCarthy; one sister Angeline Izzo, two brothers Joseph and Stephen McCarthy, all of Saratoga Springs; several in-laws, many nieces, nephews, cousins and wonderful friends and neighbors. Relatives and friends may call from 5 to 8pm Friday, April 1, 2011 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway 584-5373. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am Saturday in St. Clement's Church, 231 Lake Avenue, by the Rev. Neil Draves-Arpaia. Burial with military honors will follow in Saint Peter's Cemetery, West Avenue. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Community Hospice of Saratoga and to the professional care extended by the nurses and other staff at the Riverview Cancer Center in Rexford, NY.
