Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Barbara Helen Curtis of Saratoga Springs passed away Sunday (July 11, 2010) at the Wesley Health Care Center, Lawrence St. She was 96. Born on April 5, 1914 in Lake Luzerne, NY, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Cassius J Miller and Marian Luella Taylor. As the daughter of a pastor, she lived in several capital area communities growing up. A graduate of Troy High School, she studied music at Syracuse University. In 1933 she married Rev. Ralph Alonzo Curtis who predeceased her in 1998 and they resided in several area communities. In June of 1941, her husband entered the US Navy as a chaplain, taking her to several homes in California, Hawaii and New England. Following her husband's Naval service in 1961, they lived first in Canajoharie, NY and then Boston, MA, where her husband served as chaplain at the New England Deaconess Hospital. Barbara enjoyed her many moves with the opportunity to meet new friends. She brought her music skills in piano and voice to her churches and Navy chapels and directed many choirs. She is survived by her daughter Joanna Lasher and husband, Rev. Dr. William Lasher; their son Tarrence, his wife Lori and their children Hannah, Emily and Samuel; her son, Rev. Dr. Lawrence Curtis, his wife Helen and their children Catherine Houle, her husband David and grandchildren Lucien, Jesse and David; Cynthia Budka, her husband Kenneth and grandchildren Allyn and Colin; Daniel and his wife Lavonne and grandchildren Aaron, Jonathan, Caleb and Sarah. She is also survived by her brother Cassius and his wife Florence. She was predeceased by her brother, Taylor and did much to care for his children Donna and Taylor. Funeral services will be conducted at 2pm Wednesday (July 14, 2010) at the Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church, corner of Fifth Avenue and Henning Road. Burial will be in the family plot in the Riverside Cemetery in Mooers, NY. Memorials may be made in her name to the Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church, 175 5th Avenue or to the Wesley Foundation, 131 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
