Saratoga Springs, NY - Barbara B. Doherty Roy of Piping Rock Circle passed away Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was 74. Born on March 31, 1935 in Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY she was the daughter of the late Paul W. and Stephanie (Siney) Bigelow. She was a graduate of Garden City High School in 1952 and attended Hood College in Frederick, MD. Barbara earned a diploma in Secretarial Studies, worked for Judge George Fuller in Mineola, NY, then returned to college at Skidmore and earned her B.A. in History and American Studies in 1957. Many years later she continued her education at Russell Sage earning a M.A. in Elementary Education. Barbara taught kindergarten at Fort Edward for 23 years and also taught skiing at Willard Mountain. After retiring from teaching, she worked full time, then part time, in retail womens' special occasion clothing at Grande Entrance in Latham, then Bird of Paradise in Saratoga Springs. Barbara was an active participant in many sports, racing sailboats in her adolescent years on Great South Bay in Bellport, LI, horseback riding, skiing, tennis and figure skating. In later years, she traveled to Europe several times and South America. Barbara enjoyed tending to her extensive garden, especially her daylilies, and also participated in maintaining the Skidmore Memorial Garden. Barbara also enjoyed knitting and playing bridge. She read constantly, being especially interested in American politics and American history. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husbands, Edward Breslin Doherty and Herbert F. Roy, Sr. and a sister, Clare Sheppard. Survivors include her children, Denise L. Valenti of Babylon, NY, Maureen B. Doherty and Pauline S. Doherty of Union, NJ, Edward Todd Doherty and Timothy B. Doherty of Saratoga Springs; grandchildren, Joseph Valenti, Edward B. Doherty, Catherine Pagano, Augustine Pagano, Daniel, Matias and Trinidad Doherty, Margaret (Maggie) and Brian Doherty, Tamara deAnda, Peter and Paul Avila,; a sister Nancy Bird of Texas and numerous nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call from 2 to 5pm Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway (584-5373). Funeral services will be 10am Monday, Nov. 16, 2009 at Bethesda Episcopal Church, Washington St. with The Rev'd Canon Thomas T. Parke, Rector, and Rev. Neil Draves-Arpaia officiating. Burial will be in the family plot at St. Peter's Cemetery, West.
