Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Barbara Horton Gilmore passed away Thursday, January 29, 2009. She was 91. Born June 20, 1917 on the family farm in Hounsfield, NY, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert and Bertha Palms Horton. Barbara spent her early childhood years on the farm and graduated from Adams Center High School in 1934. She was employed at the school as assistant secretary and cafeteria manager. Barbara married Albert Gilmore at the Bellville Methodist Church on Easter Sunday, March 24, 1940. They resided in Adams Center, NY until 1964, operating a Facility for Teachers. Barbara and her husband then moved to Plattsburgh, NY where she was head baker at SUNY Plattsburgh. After leaving that position, she worked as an office manager for Monahan & Loughlin and also provided a UPS service for the local area. Barbara was involved with Girl Scouts and she and her husband were caretakers for Tapawingo Girl Scout Camp on Lake Champlain. In 1972 the couple moved to Orlando, FL where Barbara was office manager for a construction company. After spending some time in Florida, the couple moved to Atlanta, GA and formed Commercial Roofing Consulting Corporation, which they ran until 1990 when Barbara retired. Moving north, Barbara and Albert moved to Porter Corners, NY, residing there for 14 years before moving to Saratoga Springs. Barbara was often involved in various volunteer organizations. She was a trustee on the Board of Directors of Saratoga Methodist Church, covering the memorial fund, and she and her husband were both volunteers for Hospice. Barbara and her husband enjoyed dancing to jazz, and she was skilled at painting, knitting and crocheting. In the later years of her life, she devoted much of her time to cataloguing the genealogy of her extended family, and created many notebooks and albums that will be cherished for years to come. In addition to her parents, Barbara was predeceased by two sisters, Marjorlyn and Lois, and a daughter-in-law, Judy Merrill Gilmore. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Albert, her three children, Carl Gilmore (Patricia) of Roanoke, VA, Cathleen Allman (Ross) of Orlando, FL and Barbara Mae Humiston (Terry) of Saratoga Springs, as well as grandchildren Ryan Gilmore (Kim), Karin McMahon (Mark), Amy Semesco (David), Wendy Allman, Jennifer Humiston and Sarah Humiston, and six great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 14 at Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church, 175 Fifth Avenue. Arrangements are under the direction of the William J.
