Saratoga Springs - Barbara Adams Stephens of Lawrence Street passed away at the Wesley Health Care Center on Monday, January 4, 2010. She was 94. Barbara was born on August 19, 1915 in Toronto Canada, daughter of the late Stanley, an opera singer and Ethel (Freeland) Adams a Woodstock, New York artist. She is the widow of the late theatre, film and television actor William Harvey Stephens. Barbara studied dance with Martha Graham, Doris Humphery and Jose Lemon. At the age of 14, she danced for Franklyn Delano Roosevelt, the then Governor of New York in 1929 in Saratoga Springs. In 1933 she was the first female stage manager on Broadway with the production 'Roberta', a musical comedy and went on to manage 12 major Broadway plays between 1933 and 1948. She danced to raise money for the Lincoln Brigade in 1936. Later in life she published four books of her poetry between 1986 and 1998 and until recently continued writing poetry. Survivors include her son Peter Stephens of San Francisco, CA; one daughter Jill Sweet Stephens Rosenbach of Saratoga Springs; one grandson Breac Stewart of Orange County, CA; two granddaughters Marika Stephens of San Francisco, CA and Wendy Dowell of Los Angeles, CA. In addition to her husband William Harvey and her parents, she is predeceased by a sister, Clare Adams, silent movie actress; her brother Gerald Adams, screenplay writer and her son Dennis Stewart.
