Saratoga Springs, NY - Betty Jean Root Doyle, 93, formerly of Jackson Street, passed away on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at the Wesley Health Care Center, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on February 23, 1928 in Sackets Harbor, NY, she was the daughter of the late Charles Clinton and Frances Elnora Tanner Root. She was educated in the Hounsfield Central School in Sackets Harbor and graduated in June 1945. While in high school she was active in the chorus and played trumpet in the band. She graduated from A&T College in Canton (SUNY Canton), specializing in nutrition. After graduation she worked as a dietician at the Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn. Betty married William James Doyle on May 13, 1950 in the rectory of St. Andrews Church in Sackets Harbor with Wayne Corbin and Janet Lupia as their attendants. Betty and Bill moved several times from Watertown to Herkimer and Albany before settling in Saratoga Springs to raise their family.
Betty was an accomplished seamstress, making clothes for her children and grandchildren. She loved to cook and enjoyed embroidery and crafts. She was a lifelong member and communicant of the United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, and was active in the Women's Society where she enjoyed working on dinners and making crafts for the rummage sale.
In addition to her parents, Betty was predeceased by her husband William, a sister Mable (Royal) Sherman, and two brothers, Clinton Root and Herbert (Ruth) Root.
Betty is survived by three daughters, Mary (Michael) Biffer of Saratoga Springs, Sandra (James) Peters of Schuylerville, Margaret (Paul) Haley of Jericho, VT, and one son Michael (Vicki) Doyle of Rochester; one sister-in-law Beverly Doyle; twelve grandchildren Maria (Nick) Barkley, Melissa Biffer, George Biffer, James Peters, Jaclyn (David) Dobert, Kelly (Michael) Weeden, Patrick (Sandy) Doyle, Bridget Doyle, Michelle (Owen) Jacobs, Jennifer Haley, Mathew (Stef) Haley, George (Mary) Haley; and six great grandchildren, Aurora and Andrew Dobert, Wyatt Barkley, Carina Edmunds, and Wesley and Emerson Jacobs.
Friends and relatives may call from 10:00-11:00AM on Saturday, June 26th at the William J. Burke & Sons/ Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Home, 628 N. Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY. (518-584-5373), followed by a service at 11:00AM. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Avenue.
