Saratoga Springs, NY - Betty Jane Mallery Olsen, 89 years old, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2012 at the Wesley Healthcare Center, with her family at her side. Betty was born March 11, 1923 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., the daughter of the late Harris L. and Jane Wakeley Mallery. She graduated from Saratoga Spring High School in 1941 and worked as the secretary to the Director of Research and Plant Manager at the Van Raalte Manufacturing Company in Saratoga Springs. She retired from the Saratoga Springs City School District in 1986 after being secretary to the Superintendent of Business for over 32 years. Betty was preceded in death by her brother William H. Mallery in 1959 and her brother Harrie W. "Bud" Mallery in 2004. Betty was a life-long resident of Saratoga Springs, and active in many organizations. She was a member of Bethesda Episcopal church, a member and former president of the Board of Directors of the Home of the Good Shepherd, a member and former secretary of the Saratoga Springs Retired Teachers Association, and a member of the Saratoga Springs Historical Society and Saratoga Senior Citizens. She was an avid pianist, bicyclist, and knitter, including knitting caps for the newborn nursery at Saratoga Hospital and socks for soldiers during WWII. She was also a former Girl Scout Leader, and during the late 1940s served as substitute organist at the Congregational Church in Saratoga Springs and Christ Episcopal Church in Ballston Spa. Survivors are her son, Christopher Olsen, his wife Claudia Meyers, her granddaughter Mallery Olsen (all of Madison, WI) and her grandson Kyle Olsen (Belfry, KY). She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Kay Mallery (Carson City, NV), and four nephews: James Mallery (Carson City, NV), John Mallery (Grass Valley, CA), David Mallery (Roseville, CA) and Daniel Mallery (Marina del Rey, CA). Betty was a wonderful mother, who bravely raised her son as a single mom and instilled in him abundant love and values of hard work and care for others. The family wishes to thank the nurses and support staff at Wesley Healthcare Center for all the kindness and care they gave to Betty over the past 17 months. Funeral services will be conducted at 11am Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012 at Bethesda Episcopal Church at the corner of Washington St. and Broadway.
