Obituary

Bruce W. Friday of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and formerly of Webster, N.Y., died on April 19, 2024 at the Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs after living for several years with Parkinson's Disease; he was 79.

Bruce was born on August 8, 1944, to Jay and Eloise (Wharton) Friday, and grew up in Enfield, Conn., where he graduated from high school in 1962. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering in 1966 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and went on to complete his Masters and Doctorate in Electrical Engineering there as well. As a freshman at RPI he roomed with Ken Hapeman, who became his lifelong close friend. The two often reminisced about adventures at the school, particularly in their fraternity, Pi Lambda Phi. Through a friend in Troy, Bruce also met his soul mate, Nancy Cassino; they married in 1977 and settled in Webster, N.Y.

Bruce enjoyed a long career with Xerox Corporation, garnering the company several patents in photocopying technology and retiring as a chief engineer in 1999. He enjoyed traveling, growing his own vegetables, playing golf and attending professional tournaments, and following thoroughbred horse racing. In 2018 he fulfilled his long-held dream to move to Saratoga Springs, where he would be closer to friends and family and, of course, the ponies. He and Nancy were fixtures in the grandstands during the annual meet at the Saratoga Race Course, and he also shared his passion for racing with his late cousin Peter Friday, as well as Pete's son John-Paul. Bruce was diligent about doing each day's handicapping, not so much for betting as for the fun and challenge of it.

He made everything more fun and brought great enthusiasm to whatever he did. He told wonderful and often hilarious stories about his fraternity experiences, his dog Dylan, his car mishaps; but he was also a terrific listener, always eager to learn new things. He loved good food and was an excellent cook; those who shared Bruce and Nancy's table were lucky indeed.

Bruce was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Charles Friday and William D. Friday. His survivors include his beloved wife, Nancy; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Friday, Margaret Graber (Richard O'Connell), and Barbara Brown; niece, Laura Howenstein and her children, Eliza and Charlotte; nephew, Richard Brown (Genie) and their children, Tess and Nicholas; nephews, Douglas and Donald Friday; and close friends, Ken Hapeman and Kathryn Gallien.

Relatives and friends are invited to a graveside service at 10:30am on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at Greenridge Cemetery, 17 Green Ridge Place, Saratoga Springs, NY.
