Obituary

Saratoga Springs Bruce W. Haswell, of Underwood Drive, passed away Tuesday (Aug. 19, 2008) at Albany Medical Center at the young age of 68. Born on Jan. 18, 1940 in Saratoga Springs, NY, he was a son of the late Harold M. and Helen (Walsh) Haswell and a lifelong resident. A graduate of Saratoga Springs High School, he attended Union College and received his masters degree from Albany State University. A true educator at heart, he began his math career teaching at Broadalbin High School in 1964. He returned in 1965 to the Saratoga Springs School District and retired as head of the Math Department. He participated in high school basketball and football and was a former football coach for Saratoga Springs. He was a member and former president for several years of the Saratoga Springs Teachers Association and served as chief negotiator for many years. Bruce was a former racing secretary for Saratoga Harness in 1974-75 and was an avid fan of the New York Giants and Syracuse Orangemen. He was a member of Saratoga Council 246 Knights of Columbus and Saratoga-Wilton B.P.O. Elks Lodge 161. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Linda (Martin) Haswell, whom he married on Jan. 27, 1962; two daughters, Stacie and her husband, Michael Arpey and Susan Haswell; and two grandsons, Conor and Dylan Arpey, all of Saratoga Springs; two brothers and their wives, Robert W. and Donna Haswell of Sunnyvale, CA and Dr. Donald M. and Cheryl Haswell of Fayetteville, NY; his sister-in-law, Pamela Martin Christiansen and her husband, Hank, of West Brookfield, MA; six nieces and nephews, Michael Haswell, Lynne Haswell Norris, Erinn Haswell, Melissa Haswell Lockrow, Brandt and Kate Christiansen. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his two infant sons, Bruce W. and James Scott Haswell. He loved his family deeply and enjoyed spending vacations, holidays and everyday life with them. He particularly enjoyed being part of his grandsons lives. Bruce had many friends and enjoyed time with them all, as well. The most important person to him is his wife, Linda. He will be greatly missed by all. Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 7pm Friday at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway (584-5373). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am Saturday in St Clement's Church, 231 Lake Ave., by the Rev. Neil Draves-Arpaia. Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Peters Cemetery, West Ave. Special thanks to the caring staff at Albany Medical Center SICU, especially Angela, Dr. Socaris, Dr. DuBlock and Dr. Balint.
