Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY Burgess Simon (Buzz) Harr, of Lincoln Avenue, passed away Friday afternoon (Nov. 13, 2009) at his residence. He was 56. Born on Dec. 9, 1952 in New York City, he was a son of Elizabeth A. Burgess Harr and the late Lawrence Harr. He was a graduate of Trinity School in New York and attended Stephens Institute of Technology in New Jersey. Mr. Harr served as buildings and grounds supervisor at the National Museum of Dance, currently housed in the former Washington Bath House. In this capacity, he maintained one of the city's important remaining historic structures. His astute understanding of historic preservation goals and needs, and his ability to prioritize them, enabled staff at the museum to fashion NYS grants designed to maintain and preserve this venerable piece of Saratoga's past. With his peerless cabinetry skills and design sense, he was instrumental in the implementation and critical success of exhibits presented during his tenure at the museum. Much of his work was done single-handedly, demonstrating his respect for budgets as well as the wide range of his talents. He was a "renaissance man" of those skills required to keep a structure healthy and useful for its future. He leaves an important legacy in the historic infrastructure of our city! Buzz also worked for several years as the head copy boy directing the evening shift for the New York Daily News. In addition to his father, who died on July 23, 2001, he was predeceased by a brother, Jolyon Theo Harr, who died in 1981. Survivors include his mother, Elizabeth A. Burgess Harr of Saratoga Springs and many cousins in the United States and in England. Graveside services will be conducted in the spring of 2010 at the family plot in Greenridge Cemetery, Lincoln Ave. Memorials may be made in his name to Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes of 628 North Broadway (584-5373). Online remembrances may be made at www.burkefuneralhome.com.
