Obituary

Dr. Carl Fjellman, President of Upsala College and Director of the Turrell Fund, Died at 92. Saratoga Springs, NY -Carl Gustaf Fjellman, Ph.D. died at Saratoga Hospital on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 due to pneumonia. Born on May 7, 1919 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he was the son of the late Anders Gustaf and Huldah Cornelia Johnson Fjellman. Dr. Fjellman earned his bachelor's degree at Augustana College, Rock Island, IL., his PhD. from Drew University, Madison, NJ and received honorary degrees from several other institutions. Ordained into the Lutheran ministry in 1945, he served two years at Alameda, CA, then joined the faculty at Upsala College in 1947 in East Orange, NJ as a teacher of philosophy and religion, later becoming Dean, Vice President, acting President and President, leaving in 1976. During his years at Upsala, Dr. Fjellman helped the school enter the tumultuous 60's. His administration saw the completion of Puter Hall for the sciences in 1968 and the College Center in 1970. The Art Center was purchased in 1971 and in the same year a Town House complex was erected behind Froeberg Hall. As East Orange changed after the Newark riots, the college became more sensitive to its multicultural environment. The Timothy J. Still program enrolled hundreds of African - American students. Upsala became the only Lutheran college with a majority of minority students. Dr. Fjellman joined the Board of Trustees of the Turrell Fund in 1970 then located in East Orange, New Jersey, and, later in 1976, was asked to become the Executive Director of the Fund, now located in Montclair, NJ. As trustee, he was also the Secretary and Treasurer of the Fund, which was founded in 1935. As Executive Director, he traveled throughout the states of New Jersey and Vermont to become acquainted with organizations and caretakers of children who were adjudged to be in need because of impoverishment, physical or mental challenges, or without parental guardians. He retired from the Executive Director's position in 1989, but remained a trustee until year 2000. Most of his years were spent in East Orange and Glen Ridge, NJ, where he built many lasting friendships. Tennis was one of his favorite activities and he became a skilled player. He moved to Saratoga Springs, NY in 2005. He was a quiet man with an abiding interest in philosophical and theological discourse. He practiced his beliefs in rendering to the needs of others, especially needy children. Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Carolyn, their daughter Susan, and their son Thomas and his wife Angela; three grandchildren, Caroline Sherak and her husband Bret, Carl Thomas Fjellman, Nicholas Fjellman and Kirsten Fjellman; one great grandchild, Samuel Sherak; and close friend of the family Melissa Barnes.
