Obituary

Saratoga Springs- Caroline (Carolyn) Groff Brown, 87, of Locust Grove Road passed away Monday, September 28, 2009 at Maplewood Manor Nursing Home in Ballston Spa, where she had been residing the past four months. Born October 8, 1921 in Saratoga Springs, she was the daughter of the late Truman and Margaret Hill Groff. Carolyn graduated from Saratoga Springs High School class of 1939 and on October 16, 1949 she married Alfred D. R. Brown. She lived and raised her family in the city of Saratoga Springs, where she was proud to be a life-long resident and seventh generation family resident of Saratoga County. In her early years Carolyn worked for the Van Raalte Company and J.B. White Realty. Later in life, she and her husband Alfred co-owned and operated the Saratoga Giant Laundromat, for 18 years, located in the former Grand Union shopping plaza on Broadway in Saratoga Springs. Carolyn loved her family and being a homemaker. She was well known by friends and family for the wonderful meals that she would prepare and her willingness to share her knowledge of food with anyone that asked. For years she also taught cooking through Cornell Universitys Cooperative Extension Program in Saratoga Springs. She was a long time member of the Town & Country Garden Club, charter member of Brookhaven Golf Club, member of The Saratoga Golf & Polo Club and member of The Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church, where in her younger years she was a Sunday school teacher. Carolyn was a volunteer usher during the early times of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and once an active member in the Saratoga County League of Women Voters. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Alfred D. R. Brown, of Saratoga Springs; her step daughter Pamela J. Brown of Tucson, AZ; one brother Howard Groff of Saratoga Springs and her sister Janet Groff Nasetta of Waterford, CT. Survivors include her two sons, Colin G. Brown (Carol) of Saratoga Springs and Jeffrey E. Brown of Saratoga Springs; one grandson Adam Brown of South Glens Falls; two sisters, Helen Groff Ransom and Jane Groff Kuznia French both of Saratoga Springs and several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Relatives and friends may call from 2 to 4pm Saturday, October 3, 2009 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff, Inc. Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway (584-5373). A private graveside ceremony will be at 10am on Monday, October 5, 2009 at North Milton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of ones choice. The family wishes to express their appreciation for the wonderful care that Carolyn received from the staff at Maplewood Manor Nursing Home and to all of her home health care givers.
