Obituary

Saratoga Springs – Charles Arthur Carlson, 98, passed away peacefully at Saratoga Hospital in the early morning hours on December 10, 2021.  Charles, the only son of Charles Arthur Carlson and Alice Woods Carlson, was born in New York City on November 30,1923.  A graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, he was married to his high school sweetheart, Evelyn Clinton, for 73 wonderful years.

Charles and Evelyn resided in The Bronx, Clinton Corners, Mount Marion, and finally, West Hurley, NY, where they raised their children prior to moving to Saratoga Springs in 1999.  Charles joined the Navy after graduating from high school and served as an airplane mechanic in Brazil until the end of World War II. After leaving the Navy, Charles held several positions in the greater New York City metropolitan area to support his growing family. These included work in construction, mechanics, drafting, machining, and mechanical design. He then joined IBM in upstate New York as a draftsman. Over 35 years with IBM, he worked through several levels of the engineering staff until retiring as a consulting engineer.

Charles was a jack of all trades, truly believing that one could do anything when they put their mind to it.  He participated in all his children's activities; scouting, attending sports contests, concerts and everything he could be involved in for the sake of his children.  He loved to play his guitar and sing, he was an avid bowler and golf league participant and an accomplished dancer, both ballroom and square dancing. Some of those passions were passed on to his children and grandchildren to also enjoy!

Charles was a devout parishioner of the Church of Saint Peter in Saratoga Springs. His daily prayers and Rosary and his attendance at Mass gave him an inner peace. He truly believed that "everything happens for a reason" and that "everything has always worked out for him". He attributed this to his strong belief in God and his devotion to the Blessed Mother.

He was predeceased by his parents and parents-in-law, brother-in -law, Robert Clinton, and sister-in-law, Annette.  Charles is survived by his five adoring children; Carl Carlson (Lisa Heath) of Florida, Russell Carlson (Mary Ann) of South Carolina, Wayne Carlson (Caroline) of Arizona, Charlene Mumford (Joseph Sikora) and Laurette Loucks (Thomas), both of Ballston Spa, and former son-in-law Ernest Mumford of Saratoga Springs.  He also leaves behind his 12 loving grandchildren; Lisa Carlson (William Lesko) of Florida, David Carlson and Robert Carlson (Jacqueline) of Massachusetts, Eric Mumford of Porter Corners, Megan Mumford Klepetar (Colin) of Saratoga Springs, Scott Mumford of Halfmoon, Tim Mumford (Eve) of Saratoga Springs, Alyssa Mumford Noel (Adam) of Saratoga Springs, Kyle Loucks (Katelyn Matthews) of Ballston Spa, Justin Loucks of Rochester, Travis Carlson of Arizona, and Christina Lewis (Christian) of Washington State. He is also survived by 7 great-grandchildren including Alexander and Zachary Lesko of Florida, Matthew and Juliette Carlson of Massachusetts, Chase Mumford of Halfmoon, Neil and Everett Klepetar of Saratoga Springs and two more babies on their way.  He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, James Clinton (Karen) of Connecticut, Joseph Clinton (Shirley) of Illinois, sister-in-law, Rita McKee of Massachusetts and a host of nieces and nephews.

Charles has been surrounded by many wonderful friends, including longtime friend Warren Myer of Florida, Deacon Ed Solomon of the Church of St. Peter who faithfully delivered the Eucharist and visited with him, and all his amazing neighbors that have always been there for him. During Charles' hospitalization, he was lovingly cared for by his daughter Charlene, and son Carl. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the doctors, nursing staff, and support staff on D-1 at the Saratoga Hospital for their loving, caring and compassionate care, as well as Dr. Waters and Dr. Laddis, for their above and beyond diligence and support.
