Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Charles "Chuck" L. Van Wie, Jr., of Stonequist Apts., So. Federal Street, passed away, in the presence of his loving family, on Monday (May 17, 2010) at his residence. He was 87. A kind, gracious and loving person, he was born on March 21, 1923 in Saratoga Springs, a son of the late Charles L. and Helen Campbill McGinnis Van Wie, Sr. Prior to his service during World War Two, he was a member of the NYS National Guard in Saratoga Springs. A volunteer for many years at the Samuel Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, he served on the support committee at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. A veteran of the US Army Air Corps, he was honorably discharged as a corporal following service with the 363rd Air Service Group. and was a recipient of the Meritorious Unit Commendation. He had worked as a general contractor and was part owner of Vanco Construction Company. A communicant of the Church of St. Peter, he was a member of many fraternal and service organizations, including the Marcelle Nolan Chapter Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Adirondack Post 70, Gurtler Bros. Post 420 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Dominick-Smaldone Post 35 Italian American War Veterans (ITAM), Principessa Elena Society and a former scout troop leader in Saratoga Springs. He was also a Third Degree member of Saratoga Council 246 Knights of Columbus and the Saratoga Assembly 0745 Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Delno Van Wie and sister, Elizabeth (Norton) Zalucki. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Antonetta (DeVivo) Van Wie; two sisters-in-law, Frances DeVivo Jordan and Carmel DeVivo Parisi; several loving nieces, nephews and dear friends. A special thank-you to Father Dominic Ingemie, Dr. Paul Okosky, Dr. Michael Keefe and the Community Hospice of Saratoga. Relatives and friends may call from 9 to 10am Tuesday (June 1, 2010) in the Chapel of the Church of St. Peter, 241 Broadway. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am Tuesday in the Church of St. Peter by the Rev. Dominic S. Ingemie, pastor. Burial with military honors will follow at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville. Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes of 628 North Broadway 584-5373.
