Obituary

Saratoga Springs Charles W. R. Pehl, 82, of Saratoga Springs, passed away on Friday (Mar. 20, 2009) after a short illness. Born May of 1926 in Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Charles and Vera Pehl. He was predeceased by his brother Bruce. He was a graduate of Saratoga Springs High School and attended Bryant College in Rhode Island. Charlie joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17 and earned the rank of Corporal. He was involved in the engagements at Saipan and Tinian while serving in the South Pacific during World War II. Charlie was assigned to Nagasaki after the war ended to assist with cleanup. He married Joan Dwyer in 1949 and was a lifelong resident of Saratoga Springs. Charlie loved the horses, enjoyed following sports, playing golf, and spending time with family and friends. He worked at the General Electric Co. in Schenectady and was the longtime owner and operator of Sun Brite Laundry on Church Street. Charlie retired in Jan. 2009 after 16 years as dispatcher with the Department of Public Works for the City of Saratoga Springs. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Joan; daughter Betsy (Robert) Macier of San Diego, CA, sons Mark (Pamela) Pehl and Timothy (Patricia) Pehl of Saratoga Springs; grandchildren Lanie and Marc (Christina) Macier, Kaila Pehl and Keri, Christopher and Alison Pehl; several cousins, nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 6pm on Sunday, March 22, 2009 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway (584-5373). Funeral services will be at 10:30am Monday, (Mar. 23, 2009) at the funeral home with the Rev. Neil Draves-Arpaia officiating. Burial with military honors will be at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Rd., Schuylerville. Memorial donations may be made to The Wesley Foundation, 131 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. The family is grateful for all the kindness shown to Charlie by the staff of The Springs Residence 5th floor at Wesley Nursing Home during his illness.
