Saratoga Springs, NY - Christopher Fiore died peacefully on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at Wesley Health Care Center, three weeks after celebrating his 90th birthday. His wife of 62 years, Judith, was with him when he died.
Chris had a long, satisfying, interesting and adventurous life. He was born and grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and he remained a fierce and loyal Pirates and Steelers fan his whole life, suffering in their losses and rejoicing in their wins. Chris was a thinker, a scholar, a fiercely competitive tennis player, a hiker who especially loved hiking the Appalachian Trail and a lover and planter of trees. His favorite hiking buddies were his children, Eric, David and Lisa and their Father's Day hikes were a special treat to him every year.
After he graduated from High School in 1945, Chris enlisted in the Army Air Corps. The war ended soon after he enlisted and Chris was sent to Panama where he played baseball for the Army team.
Chris earned a BA degree from Duquesne University and came to New York in 1953. He and Judi met a few weeks later as counselors at a summer camp for boys with disabilities on Lake Stahahe in Bear Mountain State Park. They were married a year later. Chris earned his Master's degree in English at The City College of New York and began his long and satisfying career, first as English teacher and then as Chairman of the English Department at White Plains High School for 32 years. Chris was a brilliant teacher, mentor, friend and inspiration to the young teachers in his department and to so many of his students, some who remain close friends to this day.
Above all, though, for Chris, came family. He said many times, "The best thing I have done in my life is being a father." Chris spent countless afternoons at his children's sporting events, not because he felt he should, but because he loved being there with them. He was mindful of how fortunate he was in his beloved children and how lucky he was in his lovely daughters-in-law Carol and Dina. He was very close to his sister-in-law, Marjorie who was eleven years old when he and Judi met. He also enjoyed his niece Linda, her husband Wes and his great-nephew Andy. Chris rejoiced in each of his grand-children. Tia, Daisy, Darius, Treyson and Bridger brought him so much joy and he loved hearing stories about what they were doing in school, what sports they were playing, the plays and musical events they participated in and how their lives were taking shape as they grew older. And he was so happy about Tia's marriage to John. Throughout his life Chris enjoyed many friends in Yorktown and Saratoga and the lively and spirited discussions around the dinner table were a wonderful part of Chris and Judi's life.
A Celebration of Chris's Life will take place on Sunday, April 23rd at William J. Burke Funeral Home, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs at 11:00am. Friends and family are invited to the Fiore home at 261 Caroline Street after the Celebration.
Chris's family would like to thank the folks at Wesley for the good and compassionate care they gave to Chris.
