Daniela Zdrahal passed peacefully on July 31, 2026, at the age of 76, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on September 29, 1949, in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia, the beloved daughter of Emilie and Jaroslav Tomanec.

Family meant everything to Daniela. She is survived by her lifelong partner, Ivan; her children, Katerina and Andrew; her daughter-in-law, Cécile; her grandchildren, Luca, James, Zander, Daphné and Samuel; and her dear friend, Marcela, who was always by her side. She was happiest when her family was together, and she especially loved being a grandmother (Babi) and watching her grandchildren grow.

At a young age, Daniela with Ivan and baby Katerina left home in Vsetín, in the beautiful region of Valašsko, to begin a new life far from everything they knew. It was not always easy, but with hard work, determination and plenty of good cooking, she made a warm and loving home for her family. She showed us that same strength and courage during her painful battle with cancer, even on the most difficult days.

After graduating with honors from Hudson Valley Community College, Daniela worked as a Registered Nurse in the Labor and Delivery unit at Albany Medical Center for more than 30 years. She helped bring countless babies into the world and mentored many younger nurses along the way. Her colleagues lovingly referred to her as a “legend” and the “stubborn Czech.”

Daniela had a very dry sense of humor and could make us laugh with just a look or a perfectly timed comment. She was a tough cookie—strong-willed, resilient and always completely herself. When it came to Sudoku, she was the sharpest mind in the room. She was unique, and we would not have wanted her any other way.

Although she lived in the United States for more than 55 years, Daniela remained deeply connected to her Czech roots: the language, traditions, food, music, stories and people. At home, she showed her love in the most natural ways—through her cooking, her generous welcome and the care she gave to everyone around her. She was a wonderful and gifted cook, especially of Czech dishes, and there was always room at her table.

Her children’s friends were welcomed as family, and many stayed close to her long after they had grown up. She loved good company and travel, especially to the beach and her native country. She enjoyed discovering new places and returning to those where she had made happy memories.

Daniela taught us, by the way she lived, to work hard, care for others, remain true to ourselves and never forget where we came from. We will miss hearing her voice, listening to her stories, enjoying together her meals, and, most of all, feeling the warmth, humor and love she brought into our lives. She was our Danulka, our Dany, our Mamuš, our Babi, our friend.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 N Broadway, Saratoga Springs. A reflection of Daniela’s life and a time to share memories and stories will begin at 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Daniela’s memory to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Daniela would have appreciated supporting organizations dedicated to comfort, healing and hope.
