Saratoga Springs, NY - David Henry Ebert, 86, was called home to see the Lord on Saturday, April 8, 2017. At the time of his death, David resided with the caring staff of the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Hoosick Falls, NY, while he battled cancer and Alzheimer's, an ugly disease that takes you long before your death. David fought until the end while managing to keep his keen sense of humor.
David was born in Saratoga Springs in 1930 to Dorothy Mae Potter and Frederick Henry Ebert. He is predeceased by his brothers Leo Paul Ebert and Earl Raymond Ebert, whom he treasured. Surviving siblings are Carmella Frances Nusser (Florida), Mary Elizabeth Jeffers, and Donald Frederick Ebert (Massachusetts).
David attended Saint Peter's School in Saratoga Springs, then joined the US Army in 1948. He served in the Occupation of Germany until his Honorable Discharge in 1952, having attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. In October 1954 he married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Waghorn, at Saint Peter's Church. He proudly joined the Naval Reserves in 1970 and was part of the 12th Construction Battalion Sea Bees. He enjoyed his military duty and made many life-long friends. David also worked at the Wilton Developmental Center until retiring from both careers in 1990.
David was a member of the American Legion, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and was a
lifetime member of the Gurtler Brothers VFW. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, family card games, and spending time with his grandchildren at Schroon Lake.
David is survived by his wife of 62 years Shirley Ann (Waghorn) Ebert; son Gary Frederick Ebert and daughter Julie Ann Briscoe (Sean); grandchildren Logan, Kristiana, Joel, and Asher; brothers-in-law David (Susan) Waghorn and Gerald Waghorn, and his dear friend Ernie Hammond.
Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 7pm Monday, April 17, 2017 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (584-5373). A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Tuesday, April 18, at St. Mary's Church, Milton Avenue, Ballston Spa. Burial with military honors will follow at 12noon at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
Donations may be made in David's name to the Samuel Jeffers Childhood Cancer Foundation, (PO Box 270, Grover Beach, CA 93483 www.samjeffersfoundation.org ), in loving memory of David's great-nephew Sammy who died at age 8 from a brain tumor. David understood that the only thing worse than suffering from cancer himself was a child suffering.
