Saratoga Springs, NY - David Peter Moriarta died early Saturday morning, February 21, 2009 at Saratoga Hospital. He was 67 years old. Born on September 16, 1941 in Saratoga Springs, NY, David was the son of Eloise (Hawkins) Moriarta and Dr. Webster Merchant Moriarta. He was predeceased by his wife of 30 years, Judy Lynn (Gallup) Moriarta in 2001. David was a graduate of the Hoosac School in Hoosick, NY and attended classes at Adirondack Community College before entering the United States Navy in 1962. His military career was cut short in 1968 when a car accident resulted in an honorable discharge from military service. In 1975 David and Judy opened Moriartas Flowers on Broadway in Saratoga Springs, a business which became a thriving part of the downtown business district for more than 25 years. David was an active member of the Saratoga Springs community maintaining his membership in the Elks Club for 31 years. Over the years, he worked as a prep-cook, bartender, and chef in several local restaurants and catering facilities including the Old Firehouse restaurant, formerly located on Broadway, and in recent years could be found working at the front desk at the Community Court Hotel. Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Charles Douglas and Jo-Ann Moriarta of Middle Grove, NY, and a sister and brother-in-law, Eloise and Carlton Bowers, of Pensacola, FL; eight nieces, one nephew and numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews. David will also be mourned by Marcia and Katie Rich of Saratoga Springs, who were close family friends for many years. A memorial service will be held at Bethesda Episcopal Church in the spring. Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing of Cunniff Funeral Homes of 628 North Broadway (584-5373).
