Delores Walker's Funeral Home Service- January 21, 2021, 1:00PM
Saratoga Springs - Delores Marie Van Alstine Walker died January 13, 2021 at Saratoga Hospital. She was predeceased in death by her husband William by 13 years and survived by her 5 children; Jeanne Marie, William Henry, Delores Anne, Robert Edward, Peter James, 14 grand-children and 12 great-grandchildren.
Delores was 86. Born April 3, 1934 in Mattydale, NY, she was the daughter of Edward Abram Van Alstine and May Catherine Geiersbach and raised by father and beloved stepmother Marion Van Alstine. She once asked her Father where she was born, to which he replied, "At home." She was proud of that and she happily told people she was "homemade". She was one of six children: Edward William, Helen May, Dorothy Grace, Eileen Francis, Viola Marguarite. She attended North Syracuse high school.
She met her future husband, William "Bill" H. Walker, Sr. when his friend, "Uncle Jimmy," introduced them. Her first impression of him was that he was a grump. He had just returned from Germany, completing a tour of duty in the army. His stomach hadn't adjusted back to American food and he didn't know anyone in the area. Neither Delores nor Bill realized that "Uncle Jimmy" had set them up as each other's date until the date was nearly over. Dad took Mom on their first official date to see Godzilla and it was true love ever since.
Delores and Bill were married June 21, 1958 and lived in the town of Clay. Their marriage would last 49 ½ happy years. They moved to Saratoga Springs in 1977 where she remained until her death. Delores worked for many years at UMI and then retrained in horticulture where she completed the course with honors. I remember tales of working for a car dealership, and some government job with computers but cannot remember what she called it, but eventually she would retire. At 70, she returned to work at McDonald's where she met many new friends. Her passion in life was being helpful and supportive to others. She loved her family, especially spending time with all the grandkids and great-grandkids.
Delores was an avid reader and history buff, often recalling her experiences growing up during WWII. Though she survived 13 years after William's passing, she never took off her wedding ring. She was a loving person, she always listened, and respected your thoughts. She was compassionate for anyone in need, people and animals. She adored her family and lit up when her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren were with her. Her life was full. She loved God her family and the many people she met during her 86 short years with us.
A private funeral service will be held for the immediate family.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, January 21, 2021, at 2:30pm at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY.
