Obituary

Wilton, NY - Dolores Bena Harran, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother, passed away Friday (Mar. 6, 2009) at Saratoga Hospital, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was 77. Born on May 8, 1931 in Hyde Park, NY, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Klima) Bena. The family moved to Bacon Hill, NY where Dolores graduated from Schuylerville High School. In between academics, cheerleading practice, being a little sister to brothers Jack and Bob and a big sister to brothers David, Joseph and Elizabeth, she became an outstanding pianist, receiving her diploma for Piano from Sherwood Music School, Chicago. She graduated from Schenectady Esthetics in 1950. Dolores married Edward F. Harran in 1952. Her first daughter, Patricia (husband Gordon) Seider of Toronto, Canada, was born in 1953, followed four years later by twin daughters, Laurie (husband Anthony) Scalzo of Stillwater, NY and Cathleen (husband Tom) Boghosian of Saratoga Springs and a year later by son Jeffry (wife Jackie) Harran of Lake Havasu City, AZ. Through the years, the family enjoyed traveling, skiing, boating and camping in the Adirondacks and on the coast of Maine. Dolores was a classical pianist and taught her children and grandchildren to play the piano. She was a communicant of St. Clement's Church where she sang in the Resurrection Choir. She was a member of the Wilton Senior Citizens, Wilton Heritage Society and made costumes for Saratoga Home Made Theater. She was a wonderful cook, baker, seamstress and always loved the beach. She is predeceased by one brother, Robert Bena. In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by her siblings, John Bena of Malta, NY, Joseph (Lois) Bena of Alplaus, NY, Bishop David (MaryEllen) Bena of Halfmoon, NY and Elizabeth (Anthony) Fantauzzi of Apollo Beach, FL; four grandchildren, David and Kristen Scalzo and Elizabeth and Jordan Boghosian; two great-grandchildren, Heidi and Joan Scalzo; her brother-in-law, Stephen (Dorothy) Harran of Saratoga Springs and sister-in-law Marg Harran of Plattsburgh and many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 7pm Monday (Mar 9, 2009) at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway (584-5373). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 noon Tuesday in St. Clement's Church, 231 Lake Ave. Burial will be in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville. Memorials may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd., Loudonville, NY 12211 or to Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the Home of the Good Shepherd (Church St., Saratoga Springs), Father Francis Sullivan, nurses and staff at Saratoga Hospital, her Hospice Care and to Dr. Mastrianni and Dr. Liebers.
