Obituary

BALLSTON LAKE AND LAKE GEORGE Dolores Shields Mooney passed away at her home on Longkill Road Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009 just days before her 86th birthday. Born in Brooklyn, NY on Sept. 27, 1923, Dolores was the daughter of the late Grace (Williams) and Dr. James Shields. After graduating from The Packard School in Brooklyn, she attended Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs. Dolores Shields and Walter James Mooney Jr. were joined in marriage by Rev.Vincent Devine from Siena College. Walter was her devoted husband for 65 years before his death on Jan. 19, 2008. They made their homes in Loudonville and Ballston Lake, spending summers in Cleverdale on Lake George and Saratoga Springs. Celebrations were enjoyed together with family and longtime friends at the Wolfert's Roost Country Club, the Lake George Club and The Lake Placid Club. Her love of horses brought great pleasure to Dolores throughout her life. As a young woman, she brought her horse with her to the Skidmore stables. Riding her horse Irish around the trails surrounding her home delighted her. She and Pa traveled to horse shows to watch their grandson, Billy ride. In addition, Dolores and her Arabian show horse, Count Selman, achieved the International Arabian Horse Associations Legion Of Merit Award. During Augusts past she enjoyed watching the race horses from their box on the finish line of Saratoga Racetrack. Her many Kerry Blue Terriers that she raised gave her much joy. Her last dog, Honey, was always a comfort by her side, especially during her final days of life. Most importantly, memories of Dolores will be held in the hearts of many as a loving wife, caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Her beautiful smile will greatly be missed. Along with her parents and husband, Dolores is predeceased by her daughter, Patricia, and her brother and sister-in-law, James and Margie Shields (Gloversville, NY). She is survived by their three children and their spouses: Barbara Deuel and her husband, Bill, of Ballston Lake, NY; Walter J. Mooney III and his wife, Linda, of Mt. Airy, NC; James W. Mooney Sr. and his wife, Susan, of Cleverdale, NY. Gram is also survived by seven grandchildren: Billy Deuel and Michelle Pacquette; Deborah and John Koubek; James Deuel; Jeffrey and Jennifer Deuel; Walter and Scarlett Mooney IV; James W. Mooney Jr.; Bryn-Erinn Mooney and ten great-grandchildren. The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to all the caregivers from Neighbors NY, Inc., Hospice of Southern Saratoga County and to all her wonderful Health Care Aides who enabled Dolores to remain in the comfort her own home during the last several years. Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 7pm Monday, Sept. 28, 2009 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY(584-5373).
