Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY- Donald M. Horning of Saratoga Springs, NY passed away peacefully on July 6, 2018 after a relentless and inspiring battle with cancer. "Don/Dad/Pops/Unc" was surrounded by all of his family and dear friends during his final days.
Throughout his life Don loved cars, stock car racing, boats, and just about anything with an engine. He had a soft spot for canines, not to be confused with his equal love for hot dogs and ice cream. In fact, he loved dining out for just about any meal, mostly so he could socialize with many of his surrogate communities. His breakfast meals at various diners were a particularly special ritual shared by countless friends and family over the years. He also thrived from engaging in his work and the time he spent in New York City throughout his career. Don had a tenacious personality which made his presence known to all he encountered. He could strike up a conversation and subsequent friendship with anyone. His social gifts, love of the deal and unyielding pursuit of his goals served him well. Don held senior positions at several companies in the garment district over the course of his tenure in the fashion industry. He retired as President/CEO of August Silk Inc. in 2015 and enjoyed retirement with family and friends at his cabin on the Great Sacandaga Lake and home in Saratoga Springs, NY.
Don is survived by his wife, Patricia Horning; his three children and their families, Craig Horning and wife Melissa DePaul of Newton, MA, Alison Connors and husband Robert of Milton, MA, Cary Holbig and husband Carl of Denver, CO; his six grandchildren, Sophia, Matthew, CJ, Grant, Caitlin and Joseph; his brother-in-law, Kenneth Hapeman and wife Kathryn Gallien of Saratoga Springs; and his three nieces originally of Saratoga Springs, Nicole Hapeman, Mindy Rose and Katie Myer and their families.
Don was predeceased by his father, George Horning; mother, Evelyn Cameron Horning Palmateer of Gloversville; and his sister, Jane Anne Hapeman of Saratoga Springs.
A memorial service will be held at Bethesda Episcopal Church, 43 Washington Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 on Monday, July 9 at 11am with a luncheon for family and friends to follow.
Donations in Don's memory may be made to these two causes close to the family's heart: Skidmore College, designated for the Jane Anne Hapeman Distinguished Service Award, Skidmore College, 815 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs NY 12866 and GYRB, an organization founded by Don's family member, Connie Bramer, supporting cancer patients and their families in Upstate New York, GYRB, c/o Connie Bramer, 15A Pointe West Drive, Clifton Park NY 12065.
