Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY -Saratoga businessman and community leader Donald I. Lee died on October 30 after a brief illness. He was 84. He is survived by wife Rose Jane Lee; sons Craig Lee of Geyserville, CA, Brian Lee of Saratoga Springs, and Kevin Lee of Orlando, FL; and grandchildren Cheston Lee of Mountain View, CA, and Parker and Phoebe Lee of Orlando, FL. A successful insurance broker, Don was president of L. Stiles Insurance Agency from 1957 82, president of SGS Insurance 1982 86, and president of Lee & Lee Associates from 1986 2009. He was a past president of the Insurance Agents Association of Saratoga Springs. He was also a director of the Gloversville Federal Savings & Loan and City National Bank. Don is recognized as a leader in the growth and development of Saratoga Springs since 1957 as president of the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce, and the Saratoga Springs Rotary Club. He served on the board of numerous community organizations, and was a recipient of the Paul Harris fellowship awarded to Rotarians nationwide for extraordinary community service. As a trustee and chairman of the Saratoga Springs Historical Society, he chaired the first annual Antique Show. He was also chairman of the first annual Saratoga Springs Rotary Club Home Show. He served as a trustee of the Saratoga Springs Board of Education, and was chairman of the 1966 Active Community Thinking (ACT) management committee. He worked on a wide range of community initiatives, including Saratoga Youth Hockey, the United Community Fund, the Saratoga Arts Center, and the Community Hotel Drive. He was inducted into the Saratoga Pillar Society in 1977 in recognition of his contributions to the community. He has been an active supporter of Saratoga Hospital, serving as hospital president from 1980 91, and head of the Annual Fundraising Committee. He was named an Honorary Lifetime Board Member for his leadership. Don served in the U.S. Army European Theatre in World War II, and as an accomplished guitar player went on to organize an army orchestra of infantryman from the Blue Devils Division. A longtime parishioner of St. Clement Church, he was also a member of the St. Clement Church Council and the new church building committee. A memorial service celebrating his life will be announced at a later date.
