Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Dorothy M. Northrup passed away Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009 at Saratoga Hospital Care Nursing Home after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's. She was 88. Born Dec. 21, 1920 in Schenectady, NY she was the daughter of the late Aleda and Thomas McDermott. Dorothy moved to Connecticut at an early age and graduated from Warren Harding High School in Bridgeport, CT. She attended Pratt Institute of Art and worked as a graphic artist during WWII at General Electric Co. in Bridgeport. Dorothy met her husband, William H. Northrup in 1942 and they married in 1943. They moved to Albany, NY in 1948 and Dorothy worked for New York Telephone Co. as a graphic artist until she retired in 1982. Dorothy and her husband moved to Saratoga Springs where they built one of the first homes on Lakewood Dr. She had a great love for art and design and enjoyed painting with oil paints and pastels. Dorothy also loved animals and one of her greatest joys was spending time with her family. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Survivors include her loving husband of 66 years, William H. Northrup; her daughter, Cheryl L. LaBelle and her granddaughter, Tracey L. LaBelle all of Saratoga Springs. Dorothy is also survived by very close family friend, Sharon Chamberlain, who took wonderful care of her for many years. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Saratoga Hospital Care Nursing Home who took excellent care of Dorothy. There will be no call hours and funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. Spring burial will be in the family plot at Greenridge Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 85 Watervliet Ave., Albany, NY 12206 or the Arthritis Foundation, 1717 Central Ave., Suite 105, Albany, NY 12205.
