Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY – Edward R. Hines, beloved husband, father, Papa, Pop, brother and friend passed away peacefully on April 23,2025 surrounded by loved ones.

Ed, (Eddie) to close friends and family was born in Troy, NY on February 5, 1947, the son of the late Edward J. and Helen Hart Hines.

He was a 1965 graduate of Keveny Academy in Cohoes, NY. He entered Siena College through the ROTC program and received his BA in Finance and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.  He served a tour of duty in Viet Nam and after returning home, continued his 20 yrs of service in the Army Reserves, retiring in 1991.  At this time, he was also employed by the State of NY, Dept of Transportation, retiring from there in 2005

Ed and Carol met at the age of 15 and spent the next 56 years growing up and falling in love with their best friend.   During those 56 years they discovered that they enjoyed many of the same things.  They learned to ski and golf together and would drop everything and head out with golf clubs or skis in the back of the car for the perfect blue-sky day, for packed powder or the rolling hills of the golf course.

Golfing was especially fun for him on the weekly outings with his Golf League, made up of his old Waterford Cronies.  He looked forward to seeing them every Thursday during golf season and the 1st Monday of every month during  "Breakfast with Larry" at the Ugly Rooster. Skiing with his kids and grandkids became one of his favorite outings.  What wonderful memories we have from those fun filled trips.

He and Carol loved traveling and were fortunate to have friends and family who shared the Travel Bug.  They went on many wonderful trips, the most adventuresome one was Africa, and then came Italy, Scotland, and numerous River Cruises and Caribbean cruises.   Back in the states there was Alaska, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and the beautiful National parks of Utah, and of course many trips to Disney with the kids and grandkids.  He and Carol had a long list of adventures yet to be seen.

Ed loved and cherished his family.  He leaves behind his loving wife Carol, daughter Colleen M. Tempel and her husband Dan, son, Cory E. Hines and 7 grandchildren, Joey, Alex, Christopher and Katie Tempel and Cameron, Carter and Preston Hines, his brother Robert Hines and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, sister Marsha Hines, brother James M. Hines, nephew James D. Hines, sister-in-law Marilyn Gillespie and her husband Ron and sister-in-law Joyce Opitz and her husband Pete.

Relatives and friends are invited to call from 2-5pm on Sunday, April 27, 2025 at the William J. Burke & Sons/ Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Home, 628 n. Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. His wife Carol and his family would like to thank everyone for their love and support during Ed's battle with Cancer.  We were blessed to be surrounded by so many wonderful friends, neighbors and family members.  Your kindness and compassion will never be forgotten.

Carol would also like to thank Community Hospice, who stood by her every day, especially Ed's nurse Vicky who gave her a shoulder to lean on for support through it all.  She was truly an angel who took her under her wings and stood by her through her darkest time.  Words cannot express her gratitude and love.
