Saratoga Springs, NY - Elizabeth M. (Beth) McCarthy, 83, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at her home, with her sons at her side.
Beth was born February 26, 1935 in Saratoga Springs, NY, the 6th of 7 children to the late Carl and Mary Cogan McMahon. A 1953 graduate of St. Peter's Academy in Saratoga Springs and a 1956 graduate of St. Peter's School of Nursing in Albany, NY, She started and ended her nursing career at Saratoga Hospital. During her tenure at Saratoga Hospital, she worked in the emergency room, maternity ward, night supervisor, and retired from there working in nursing administration. She also worked at Glens Falls Hospital and, for a brief time, at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC. In addition, she was also a nurse for Saratoga Race Track, Saratoga Harness Track and for many local health care providers. Beth was passionate about helping people and was proud of her nursing legacy. On June 21, 1958 she married Anthony P. McCarthy at St. Peter's Church in Saratoga Springs and together they raised two sons, Anthony Phillip and John Michael.
Beth was very witty, intelligent, sincere and truly authentic. Her love for her husband, sons, their wives, grandchildren, siblings, and her entire family ran deep and was the magnet that drew the family together. She had a passion for a variety of activities including golf, horse racing, travelling, preparing home-cooked meals, playing bridge, Scrabble, watching the Yankees, and always trying to find the loosest slot machine at the Racino. Summer in Saratoga was a special time for Beth. It brought the horses (which she loved to handicap), but it also brought the cars she parked at her childhood home for over 70 years. Most importantly, it brought many friendships that developed on "Beth's Porch". Beth was curious, adventurous, compassionate and empathetic. In her later life she travelled to many places in the US and around the world. While her immediate family greatly mourns her passing, her countless adoring friends will also experience a great void left by her loss.
In addition to her parents, Beth is predeceased by her loving husband Tony; three sisters Jeanne Coseo, Mary Reuss and Margaret Markes; and one brother, Edward J. McMahon.
Survivors include her two sons, Anthony P. (Hiroko) McCarthy of London, United Kingdom and John M. (Lynda) McCarthy of Franklin, Massachusetts; five grandchildren, Leah (Damien) Tocci, Sara McCarthy, Aya McCarthy, Bradley McCarthy, and Emi McCarthy; one great-grandchild, Macie Tocci; one brother, John L. McMahon of Saratoga Springs and a sister, Katherine Coons of Schuylerville. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and cherished friends and neighbors, all of whom had their own unique relationship with Beth. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the many health care professionals who aided Beth in her final days.
