Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - The family of Emma A. Miller gave her to the care of her Eternal Father, at the Wesley Health Care Center, Lawrence St., on Tuesday, April 20, 2010. She was 91. Born Emma Alberta Granger on August 10, 1918 in Fort Ann, she was the daughter of the late Bert and Laura Washburn Granger. She married John Henry Miller of Saratoga Springs and together they made their home on West Avenue, where John, a veteran of both World Wars, died unexpectedly on August 8, 1957. Emma continued to make a home for her family there for 50 years. A woman of great faith and passion for God, her life was filled with the blessings of her six children, 19 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and her friends. She was featured in the Saratogian newspaper on Mother's Day in 1996, in an article titled "A mother's heart is...a family's soul." Emma attended Lake George High School, received a GED in 1967, and later completed several courses at Adirondack Community College. Until her husband's death, she worked as a produce clerk at Hughes Market on Washington St. She retired from the state of New York in 1977, where she worked as a charge therapy aide at the Wilton Division of the Rome State School. After her retirement, she enjoyed part time employment at the Carl Company store in the former Pyramid Mall. A gifted and self taught musician, she played the organ at her church for many years. Survivors include her son, John B. (Dawn) Miller of Las Vegas, NV and daughters, Joyce (Allan) Waldinger and Patricia Miller, all of Saratoga Springs, Linda Canterbury of Glens Falls, Karen (James) Ernst of Wilton, as well as her grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents; a daughter, Ida Harrington; two step-daughters, Mary Jane Collins and Jesse Elkey; a son-in-law, Robert Canterbury, Jr.; a sister, Dorothy Rozell and three brothers, Roger, Stanley and Winfred Granger. Relatives and friends may call from 10 to 12noon Saturday, April 24, 2010 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway 584-5373, followed by a celebration of her life and love at 12noon. Burial will follow at the family plot in North Milton Cemetery, Route 29, North Milton. Memorials may be made in her name to Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., or to the Wesley Foundation, 131 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
