Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - On Sunday, August 15, 2010 at approximately 2:15 p.m., Ethel Maria Yarbrough entered into eternal rest with her son, Roland Yarbrough, by her side. Ethel Maria Yarbrough was born March 1, 1908 in McKenny, Virginia to Mary Johnson and William Wyche. Mrs. Yarbrough left her quiet, country lifestyle in McKenny, Virginia, following her school sweetheart, Dallas Yarbrough Sr., to Saratoga where they were married on November 18, 1931. Together, they had three beautiful children - Dallas Jr., LaVerne, and Roland. Mother Yarbrough, as she was affectionately known, was the mother of the Mount Olivet Baptist Church of Saratoga Springs, NY. At 102 years old, she was not only the oldest member of the church but she was also the longest living member. Under the leadership of former pastor, Reverend Clinton Lee, the Green-Yarbrough Scholarship Fund was established, in recognition of the two mothers of the church at the time Mother Ethel Yarbrough and Mother Cora Green. Under the leadership of the current pastor, Rev. Sean Barrett, the Scholarship Fund is a source of financial support and encouragement to Mt. Olivet youth who go on to pursue a college degree. Known for her delicious homemade baked goods, Mrs. Yarbrough was very active in the church. She was a member of the former Missionary Society, Pastor's Aide Committee and also taught Sunday School. In addition, Mother Yarbrough served as a member of the church choir and acted as its President for a time. She, along with former church member and good friend, Mamie Sims, started a youth choir in the late 1950s. Musical talent ran in the Yarbrough family as each of her three children played the piano for the church. When Roland left Saratoga to go away to school, Mrs. Yarbrough stepped right up and played for the church in his absence. Though predeceased by her husband, Dallas Yarbrough Sr., son, Dallas Yarbrough Jr., daughter, LaVerne Yarbrough, and sister, Lillian Stancil, Mrs. Yarbrough leaves to mourn her son, Roland Yarbrough of Saratoga Springs, grandson, Markos Yarbrough of Albany, NY, granddaughter, Kimberley Jaksina of Waltham, MA, niece and grandnephew, Eleanor & Thomas Preaster of Syracuse, NY, four great grandchildren, and four great great-grandchildren, as well as a host of friends and associates with who she was endeared during the one hundred and two years of life she shared with everyone! Funeral services will be Saturday, August 21 at 11:00 a.m. at the Mount Olivet Baptist Church, located at the corners of Jefferson & Crescent Streets in Saratoga Springs. Calling hours will precede the service from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will follow at Greenridge Cemetery.
