Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Gary Gutchell died of complications from heart disease on the morning of June 6 th , 2022, at Shaker Place Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Albany, NY.

Gary was born in Burlington, VT, on June 13th, 1933, to Raymond and Ethel (Robair) Gutchell. He was the youngest of his family. He always spoke fondly of boyhood life, filled with funny adventures and anchored by his loving parents and three older sisters. He graduated from Cathedral High School in Burlington in 1951. In December 1952, he entered the Air Force and served until December 1956 after which he pursued a Bachelor of Arts in English at Saint Michael's College through the Air Force ROTC. He graduated from Saint Michael's on June 6, 1960. He embarked on a teaching career he enjoyed, teaching English to high school students. He married Cecile Renaud of Hardwick, VT in 1961. As his family grew, he transitioned from teaching to sales and joined Prentice Hall Publishers in their college textbook division. He retired from Prentice Hall after a long career, having trained and mentored many salesmen and saleswomen whom he held in high esteem and remembered fondly throughout his life.

Gary and Cecile raised five children whom he loved and who loved him deeply. Gary enjoyed traveling. His hobbies were gardening, woodworking and food and candy preparation. His nieces and nephews held a special place in Gary's heart. He was committed to the concerns of society. After retirement, he worked for St. Clement's Church which brought him happiness as a devoted parishioner. He was proud to play a role in bringing the Shelters of Saratoga (SOS) to its first location at St. Clement's. He was supportive of his friends and celebrants of St. Clement's parish. Gary served­ on the Board of Directors for the SOS and the Economic Opportunity Council. He was a volunteer for The Community Hospice and received their Volunteer of the Year award in 2009. Gary was an honorary Third Degree member of Saratoga Council 246 Knights of Columbus and a member of Saratoga Assembly 745 K of C Fourth Degree

Gary spread love to those he encountered. In his final days, he briefly lived in the Shaker Place Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, where he greeted staff and fellow residents each day with spirited good wishes.

Gary is predeceased by his wife Cecile, his daughter Jennifer Gutchell, and his sisters and brothers-in law, Kathryn DeVarney (Reginald), Barbara Kerner, and Virginia Mayette (Wilfred).

He is survived by his daughters Kathryn LeCours, Emily Gutchell, Veronica Gutchell, his son Matthew Gutchell, his brother-in-law Charles Kerner, his 13 nieces and nephews of the DeVarney, Kerner, and Mayette families, along with their spouses and children. He is additionally survived by his wife Cecile's large extended family. Gary loved his family and extended family very much.

Relatives and friends may call from 4-7pm, Friday, June 24th at the William J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 (518-584-5373).  Members of the K of C will meet at the funeral home Friday (June 24) at 5pm for their service. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 am on Saturday, June 25th at St. Clement's Church, 231 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs.
