Saratoga Springs, NY - George Henry Hobin died at 85 years of age at the New Jersey Veterans Home in Paramus, NJ, on Sunday (Feb. 28, 2010) of natural causes, after a long illness. Born in East Rutherford NJ, at the age of 17 volunteered for the US Navy and served as a tail gunner during World War Two. Following the war, he married Frances Maddie and they had three children, Carol, Glenn and Mary. George worked for ESSO International and left to own several service stations, then began working for the Nationwide Insurance Company as an agent and Manager. He resided in New Jersey and moved to Saratoga Springs, NY in the late 70's and was a Nationwide Insurance agent with their Ballston Spa office until his retirement to Florida. George was very civic minded and served a term as Councilman in Rockaway Township, NJ and was elected by the council as the township Mayor. Education was important to George and he attended evening college and earned a degree from Thomas Edison College in his 50's. In retirement, he became the president of the homeowners association at his retirement village in Fort Pierce, FL. He was always active in the church throughout his life, managing bingo and becoming a lector in his Catholic Church parishes as he moved through NJ and NY. He is predeceased by his parents Anna and Michael Hobin, his spouses, Frances Maddie Hobin and Patricia Prunier Hobin and his siblings, Bud Hobin, James Hobin, and Joan Walmach and several nieces, cousins and in-laws. Survivors include his children, Carol Ann Boeckel, Glenn Martin ( Ruth) Hobin, Mary Beth (Moray) Callum; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two sisters, Helen Brooks and Marie Maher and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws. Relatives and friends may call from 10 to 11am Thursday morning (Mar. 4, 2010) in the Chapel at the Church of St. Peter, 241 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY. Online remembrances may be made at www.burkefuneralhome.com. The family is thankful for the kindness and care George received through the Iowa Veterans Home, the New Jersey Veterans Home and the hospice workers that showed so much love and kindness in his care. George was a friend to all, a consistent shoulder to cry on or to lean on for support, priding himself on being a problem solver and would freely share this skill with others. He was kind and taught by example the value of forgiveness. He stood for Integrity, Faith, and Loyalty. "A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth." Ecclesiastes 7:1.
