John Eckert

Saratoga Springs, NY - George J. "Jack" Eckert, LCDR USN (Ret.), of White St., died Thursday morning (Jan. 14, 2021) at the Wesley Health Care Center. He was 95.
Born on May 29, 1925 in Saratoga Springs, he was a son of the late John A. and Leona Mingay Eckert and a lifelong resident. Jack graduated in 1943 from Saratoga Springs High School, attended Union College and entered the US Navy. Jack participated in duty during World War Two, the Korean and Vietnam wars. He served aboard six ships, including duty on the Battleship New Jersey. Having served on the staffs of Mine Force Atlantic, Carrier Division Four, Middle East Force, Bahrain and Military Equipment Delivery Team, Burma. Further, his positions included Meteorological Officer, Naval Air Station at Sanford, FL and as Commanding Officer of area Naval Reserve Training Centers in Glens Falls, Troy, Albany and Scotia.
A former usher and communicant of the historic Church of St. Peter, he was an honorary life member of Saratoga Council 246 Knights of Columbus. As an active member and longtime Faithful Scribe of Saratoga K of C Fourth Degree Assembly 745, he served as Commander of the assembly's Color Corps and Honor Guard for many years.
Long active in community volunteer service and veterans organizations, he was an Eagle Scout of Boy Scout Troop 11 and a recipient of the Saratoga Council Silver Beaver Award. A member and former Assistant Quartermaster of Gurtler Bros. Post 420 VFW, Adirondack Post 70 American Legion, Chapter 66 Vietnam Veterans of America, Pup Tent 33 Military Order of the Cooties, Retired Officers' Association, Union College Alumni Assoc. (Navy V-12), American Meteorological Society, the NRA and National Eagle Scout Association.
Among numerous awards, he was selected by Hudson Mohawk Counties Council as VFW Member of the Year, a K of C Old Timer of the Year and was awarded the NYS Senate's Liberty medal.
Survivors include one brother, Richard (Dick) Eckert of Saratoga Springs; two sisters, Mary L. Gomez of Metairie, LA and Josephine Armstrong of Sanford, FL; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth Staiger and June Eighmey and a brother, James Eckert.
Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 6pm Wednesday (Jan.20, 2021) at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing and Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway. The K of C will meet at the funeral home Wednesday at 5pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday June 25, 2021 at 10:00am at the Historic Church of St. Peter. Burial with military honors will follow at 11:30am at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 20 Duell Road, Schuylerville.
