Obituary

George A. Waghorn, 68, of Saratoga Springs, NY passed on to the The Lord on Thursday, June 27, 2024, following a long battle with blood cancer. George was born on January 24, 1956 in Greenport, Long Island, NY to Bob and Sally Waghorn. He spent most of his formative years in Bay Shore, NY where he attended Bay Shore High School and graduated in 1974. He attended The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, graduating in 1979 with a degree in Psychology.

After college, George pursued a technical degree at the Grumman Data Systems Institute where he attained certification as a computer programmer in December, 1981.  He then sought work in the Wall Street financial district in NYC.  Starting as a programmer for a boutique consulting organization in 1982, George advanced to work for a number of banks, brokerage houses, and eventually, the American Stock Exchange and the NASD from 1990 through 2007.  He rose to the level of Vice President and held technical leadership positions in both Development and Operations, and then executive roles in technical strategy, planning and administrative positions.  After the dissolution of the American Stock Exchange, George moved on to the insurance industry in a global operational leadership position with XL Capital, based in Stamford, CT.  Over a 5-year tenure, his duties took him to many countries in Europe and to India.  He then ended his career in 2021 after eight years in operational, development and administrative roles at CDPHP, a healthcare insurance company in Albany, NY.

George was a long-time parishioner at St. Clement's Church in Saratoga Springs, NY and, following his retirement, was a regular attendee at daily mass.

George is survived by his dear wife, Joann Waghorn (Married in 1985), their three daughters and their husbands – Kristen and Chris VonBargen of New York, NY; Sister Marguerite Marie (Katelyn Waghorn) of The Disciples of The Lord Jesus Christ Convent in Prayer Town, TX; and Michelle and Tim Beekman of Berkeley Heights, NJ.  George is also survived by his four awesome grandchildren – Patrick and Luke VonBargen and Samuel and Madelyn Beekman.  George's parents – William Robert (Bob) Waghorn and Sarah Hart (Sally) Waghorn both long predeceased him.  George's 7 siblings have all survived him – Helen Marie Oriend (VA); Kathleen Patricia Stalter (OH); Mary Frances Haynos (MD); Margaret Lucille Foeckler (MD); David Gerard Waghorn (VA); Emily Grace Madan (MD); and Andrew John Waghorn (VA).

There will be visitation hours from 4pm-7pm on Friday, July 5, 2024 at William J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home located at 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated the following day, Saturday, July 6, 2024, beginning at 12noon at St. Clements Church located at 231 Lake Ave, Saratoga Springs, NY.

A committal service is planned for Monday, July 8, 2024 at 12noon at St. Peter's Cemetery located at 150 West Ave, Saratoga Springs, NY.
