Obituary

Saratoga Springs - George G. Wimet born May 15, 1948 passed away with his family by his side on the morning of June 27, 2023.

George met his high school sweetheart Linda one morning at the school bus stop and they were inseparable since. He would walk miles after moving to visit Linda after school or on the weekends. He married Linda Lee Milner in 1970 and had their only daughter Shelby in 1975. Family was the most important part of his life and he devoted his life to his wife, daughter, dale his son in law and Kohlby his grandson. George was married to Linda for 52 years.

He worked over the years for Dehns florist( he definitely had a green thumb),in transportation for the Saratoga Springs School District and Skidmore College prior to working in security for the NYS police in Albany and at the capitol building until he retired from the state. He always had a regimented schedule and the day he retired he took off his watch and never put one on again. Retiring from the state didn't keep him from getting back in the game and working part time in security to stay busy.

George enjoyed traveling with family and spending time together. Time was the best gift you could give him. He fully supported the interests of his daughter and grandson making sure to make time to attend all the activities from recitals, school events, art shows, youth and high school sports games, National competitions, graduations, fundraisers, vacations and holidays.

He had a special bond with Kohlby and they even had a special hand shake from the time he was little. He would never miss anything to do with Kohlby and was proud to see all of Kohlby's accomplishments.

George was like a second dad to his son in law and they often talked about how to fix and build things especially when it came to cars.

He loved to fish and deep sea fish with his son in law and grandson in New Hampshire. He enjoyed traveling for family vacations all over the US. He enjoyed gardening and would grow plants and flowers and bushes from clippings. He loved to putter in his yard all year long until this spring when his health started to become an issue and completing tasks became more difficult. He lived a very active life until he recently became ill.

He is predeceased by two sisters Carole Hawthorne of Saratoga and Jeanne Monroe of Saratoga and two nephews.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart Linda Wimet, his daughter Shelby Wimet-Himelrick, son-in-law Dale Himelrick, grandson Kohlby Himelrick, all residing in Gansevoort, a sister Mary Dunham Walters of North Carolina, a brother James Wimet (Sandra) of Greenfield and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his best friend Bill Gold (Carol) who was like family to him.

The last 59 days of his life he impacted many people's lives and his care givers made special connections with him. We would like to thank St Peter's Hospital ICU for being so kind to him and going above and beyond in caring for him outside of medical treatment. Melissa could always understand him when he could no longer talk and promised him ice cream when he could swallow again, Amanda and Carly for always making sure he was comfortable and had country music to listen to or TV to watch. Rebecca would tell him dad jokes when we weren't there because she knew he liked them and wanted to keep him in good spirits, Sarah knew he loved the Mets and made sure he saw the Mets vs.Yankees game and wrote go Mets on his board on the wall. Kendra for making his 75th birthday special even when he was in an induced coma. She made a happy birthday poster and the nurses and techs signed it and hung it in his room so he'd have it when he woke up and then printed a picture of a birthday cake and taped it to his feeding tube nutrients. Alyssa and the other nurses for coloring pictures of plants to decorate his room and making sure he got an extra boost when he needed readjusting. For Katie and Rebecca for making his last moments peaceful and comfortable. I know there are so many others that he touched their life and they touched his, but it is so hard to put my head around everyone in the moment. We thank everyone so much.

In lieu of flowers, donations can go to the charity he supported Hop on Home Rabbit Sanctuary. Hoponhome.org.
