Saratoga Springs, NY - Gerald Douglas Hilyard passed away at Saratoga Hospital on November 28, 2021 after a brief illness.  He was 84 years old.

Born in Royalton, New Brunswick, Canada, Gerald was raised by his loving parents Sewell and Audrey Hilyard with his brother in Maine.  He is predeceased by his wife, Frederica Hilyard of 60 years and is survived by their three children: Cynthia Burgher of Schuylerville, New York, Carolyn Hilyard-Walker of Alexandria, Virginia and Mark Hilyard of Portsmouth, Rhode Island and six grandchildren.

Raised along the coast in Jonesport, Maine, Gerald graduated from Fairfield High School in 1956. Gerald earned his BA in Psychology in 1960 from Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts. After his marriage to Frederica, Gerald resided in Bangor, Maine, where he earned a Master of Arts in Psychology from University of Maine-Orono in 1963. His daughter Cynthia was born in Maine, but Gerald and Frederica returned to Massachusetts to raise their growing family with daughter Carolyn and son Mark in the town of Marshfield. Gerald opened a private practice in family counseling and embarked on a distinguished career as a Professor of Psychology at Curry College in Milton, Massachusetts.

The Hilyard's enjoyed 45 years along the shore of southeastern Massachusetts before retiring to Saratoga Springs, NY.  Having grown up along shore, Gerald appreciated marine life and culture. He spent many afternoons gazing out to sea speculating about the weather and waves and wondering about the days' catch on the lobster boats, while watching his children play on the beach and grow.  He also loved a good road trip and packed up the family and spent many summers traveling the United States and Canada. He is known by many for his deep empathy and measured guidance provided over the years.

Services will be held at a later date in Marshfield, MA.
