Saratoga Springs - Giovannina Izzo, 79, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family and friends on March 16, 2017 following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born on July 11, 1937 in Treglia, Italy to the late Vincenzo and Maria Accera Zacchia and was married to Lucio P.R. Izzo on July 31, 1958 in Italy. Giovannina was an elder care giver for many years. She was a volunteer for the Red Cross Meals on Wheels and spent many days in her children's schools as a parent volunteer. She loved her plants and garden and would often be found strolling around her yard in the summer months or sitting on the porch enjoying the day with her furry sidekick and constant companion Bella by her side. A lifelong communicant of the Church of St. Peter's in Saratoga Springs and a proud member of the Catholic Daughters of Americas Court McLaughlin #422.
In addition to her parents, Giovannina's was predeceased by her husband Lucio P. R. Izzo on February 15, 1972; two brothers, Saverio and Antonio Zacchia of Italy and one sister-in-law Nicolina Izzo Fleming.
She is survived by her children, Evelina (Robert) Schretzlmeir, Anna (Vince) Iannacito, Lucio (Vellecia) Izzo and Maria Izzo; her beloved brother-in-law Mario R. Izzo and sister-in-law Rosa Zacchia; grandchildren Rebeca Schretzlmeir, Antonio, Mario, Vincent and Anthony Iannacito, Amanda Dukett and Hollie Quinn; her nephew and Godson Joseph (Leslie) Fleming; nieces Maria and Patrizia and nephew Vincenzo, all of Italy; great nephew and niece Cullen and Mackenzie and ten great grandchildren.
Many thanks are given to Giovannina's Saratoga Hospice Team for the support, care and love they gave her and the many other individuals who assisted her in this past year during this difficult illness.
Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 8pm Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway (584-5373).
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am Wednesday, March 22, 2017 in the historic Church of St. Peter, 241 Broadway, by the Rev. Thomas H. Chevalier, pastor. The Rite of Committal will follow in the family plot at St. Peter's Cemetery, West Ave.
Memorial donations may be made to The Community Hospice of Saratoga, The Mollie Wilmot Radiation Oncology Center of Saratoga Hospital or Saratoga Central Catholic School.
