Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY- Gordon Alden Buchanan, 93, died November 10, 2023 in Saratoga Springs, NY. after a short illness. He was born in Old Town, Maine on May 19, 1930, the son of the late Alden F. and Irma A. (Chase) Buchanan.

Gordon was raised in Old Town, Maine and graduated from Old Town High School in 1948. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War, having served on the Battleship New Jersey. While on leave in 1951 he married his life-long partner, Rachel Rogers, and their son, Stuart, was born while Gordon was at sea. Daughters Rhonda and Daphne soon followed. Upon his return from service, Gordon attended the University of Maine at Orono where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society. As a young married student with a family Gordon also managed to work full-time at the Penobscot Chemical Fiber Co. (the "Mill") in Old Town. He graduated in 1955 with a degree in Business and Economics and was recruited by the General Electric Co. where he entered their trainee program and ultimately enjoyed a long career. During his employment with GE, Gordon served in various managerial positions, principally in Syracuse and Schenectady, NY and in Philadelphia and King of Prussia, PA. He retired in 1992 after 37 years. Gordon was a member of Star in the East Masonic Lodge in Old Town and was a former member of the Old Town Methodist Church.

Gordon and Rachel were married for 66 years and for many years after his retirement, they spent a part of each year at their lakeside cottage in Enfield, Maine. Gordon enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an accomplished woodworker and amateur gunsmith. He had a keen interest in genealogy and history, compiling a record of the Buchanan and Rogers families going back many generations. He maintained a lifelong affection for his native State of Maine.

He is survived by his son, Stuart A. Buchanan (Mary), of Tully, NY; daughters, Rhonda A. Pray (Dr. Thomas Pray) of Amsterdam, NY, and Daphne J. Forezzi (late Robert Sr.) of Ballston Spa, NY; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and sister, Ann A. Huffman of John Day, OR.
