Obituary

Saratoga Springs, New York - Gordon Lyons Sutin, 87, passed away on October 27, 2015. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1928, he was the son of Bernard (Barney) and Gladys Sutin and brother of Harold Sutin (2008) of Stoney Creek and Beverley Bernick of Toronto. In 1949, Gordon graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in engineering and moved to Hamilton, Ontario, where he and his late wife Helen (née Hurd) raised their five children. In 1960, he formed an engineering consulting practice in Hamilton, and in 1972, his practice earned the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada's Award of Excellence recognizing his unique "SWARU" Resource Recovery Facility as the leading civil engineering project in Canada. In 1980, with Patrick Mahoney of Albany, Gordon founded Energy Answers Corporation, formed with the purpose of designing, building, owning, and operating facilities based on the waste-to-energy technology developed in Hamilton. He served continuously as vice chairman and executive vice president of the corporation until his death. In 1986, Gordon moved to Massachusetts to manage the construction of SEMASS, a large resource recovery facility which was completed in 1989. Upon completion, he moved to EAC's head office in Albany, and for several years traveled worldwide to introduce EAC technology to eastern and western Europe as well as to Japan, Korea, China, and Taiwan. Gordon was a kind, patient, and generous person who was greatly loved by his family and his wide circle of friends both in Canada and in the United States. He enjoyed opera, bridge, traveling, and dining, and welcomed every experience that life offered him. His appreciation and enjoyment of life are an inspiration to all who were lucky enough to have been a part of his life. He will be greatly missed. Gordon is survived by his wife, Diane Benton of Saratoga Springs, five children: Douglas (Joyce), David, Paul (Sandi),and Karen Burke (Nick), all of Ontario, and Mark of British Columbia; two step-children: Janice Design (Sam) and William Benton (Jody) of Saratoga Springs; nine grandchildren: Katrina, Matthew, Kate, Steven, Aaron, Derek, Blair, Aidan, and Elizabeth; five step-grandchildren: Alex, Cody, Kayla, Larissa and Savannah; and one great-grandchild, Nathan. A celebration of Gordon's life will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2015, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at Longfellows Restaurant, 500 Union Ave., Saratoga Springs. A celebration in Canada will follow in November. Gordon's final resting place will be with Helen, in Bayview Cemetery, in Burlington, Ontario.
