Saratoga Springs, NY- Gwendolyn Jane “Gwen” Lyman, 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 17, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on October 27, 1938, to Glenn and Wilhemina Schumaker and grew up in Oriskany, New York. She married Richard F. Lyman on October 25, 1958, and together raised five children. Gwen lived in the Mohawk Valley and Coxsackie, New York, before settling in Saratoga Springs in 1972.
Gwen had a creative spirit and strong work ethic. She worked as an interior designer for Montgomery Ward and later held retail management positions with IZOD and CB Sports. She also owned and operated her own ceramics business for many years, where she taught classes and created meaningful pieces cherished by others. Gwen had a deep love for gardening and landscaping. She took great joy in decorating her home during the holidays, especially at Christmas. She also spent time crafting beautiful wreaths for craft fairs, holidays, and special occasions. During her children’s early years, she devoted her time to her community as a Girl Scout leader, a Cub Scout troop leader, and a member of the Greenfield Center PTO. In her later years, Gwen and her husband enjoyed spending summers at Alpine Lakes and traveling abroad. Her most precious time was spending time with her family.
She is survived by her children: Deborah (Bob) Yampey of Texas, Mary Jane (Peter) Orecki of Wynantskill, Gerald Lyman (Jana Masten) of Ballston Spa, James (Becky) Lyman of Connecticut, and Douglas (Lori) Lyman of Virginia. She was the very proud grandmother of sixteen grandchildren: Robert “J.P.” (Adriana) Yampey, Juliet (Roberto) Porras, Keith (Tami) Yampey, Kelley Yampey, Maggie Rambaran, Alisen Yampey, Michael (Kayla) Orecki, Nicholas Orecki, Patrick (Kelly) Orecki, Katie (Robert) Theilemann, Sherry (David) Galkiewicz, Brandy Lyman, Richard Lyman (Jessica), Kyrsten (Simeon) Monroe, Devin Lyman (Raimie Utterback), and KrisJon (Rebecca) Lyman. She also leaves behind twenty cherished great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her sister, Carol and brother-in-law Robert Grimm; her sisters-in-law, Gale Schumaker and Marion Schumaker; as well as several beloved nieces and nephews. Gwen was predeceased by her husband, parents, and her two brothers, Glenn and George Schumaker.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Gwen’s many neighborhood friends especially Kathy Frost; Nurse, Heather Scarpenny and Community Hospice of Saratoga; Leeann and Nicole of Home Instead; and Dr. Meehan for their compassionate care, kindness, and support.
Funeral services will be private with interment at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery alongside her husband.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice, the American Heart Association, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
