IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Harry H.
Love Md
June 29, 1930 – January 28, 2025
Saratoga Springs, NY- Dr. Harry Houghton Love was born on June 29, 1930, in Little Falls, NY, the youngest child of Grace Rutan and Archibald Longworth Love, Jr. Raised in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, he attended Erasmus Hall and then Hamilton College in Clinton, NY, where he was the fourth generation of the Love family to do so. At Hamilton, he joined the Emerson Literary Society (E.L.S.) and majored in biology and chemistry. He went on to earn his medical degree from Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University) in 1956.
During his residency in Denver, Colorado, he met Martha Ann Shelton, a nurse from Miami, Oklahoma. They married in August 1958. After finishing his residency in Milwaukee, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving at Luke AFB in Arizona. In 1963, the Loves relocated from Arizona to New Hartford, New York where he established a 34-year surgical practice in Utica. Later in his career, he worked as a medical director in the early years of Mohawk Valley Health Care (MVP) in the Utica area.
On top of the busy, all-hours lifestyle of a surgeon, Dr. Love was an active and generous volunteer in the local community. He served as a board member of the Presbyterian Home in New Hartford and the Rescue Mission of Utica. He was an elder and trustee of the New Hartford Presbyterian Church, and served as a trustee of E.L.S. fraternity at Hamilton College. Additionally, he served as team doctor for the Clinton and Mohawk Valley Comets hockey teams.
Beyond his dedication to his practice and patients, in his spare time and in retirement, Dr. Love was an avid genealogist, updating and extending the branches and roots of the Love, Houghton, and Rutan family trees, while actively keeping the oral family history alive. He loved to work with his hands and could often be found repairing fences and caring for their home in New Hartford, or planning the project list for the beloved family property in the Adirondacks at Lake Pleasant. For Harry (aka Grampy), any project was always better done in the company of members of the next generations - an opportunity to model the joy of hard work and to teach the finer points of wise planning, tool management, and careful execution.
He is survived and greatly missed by his wife of 66 years, Martha; their three children, Allan (Lisa Golkowski), Daniel (Carol), and Sarah Ireland (Ron); his three grandchildren, Taylor, Audrey, and Hyelom; and the many members of his extended family.
Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Lake Pleasant, NY this summer. Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/ Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Home, 628 N. Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
In lieu of flowers, gifts to honor Dr. Love may be made to the Rescue Mission of Utica, 293 Genesee Street, Utica, New York 13501. Online gifts may be made here: https://uticamission.org/donate/.
