Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Henry J. (Hank) Meindl died Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at the age of 93. He was born in Arnbruck, Bavaria, Germany in 1919, and came through Ellis Island in 1925, bound for Chicago. He served his new country in WWII, stationed in England, as a military policeman where, because of his fluency in German, he spent much of his tour guarding the ever-growing number of German POW's. Returning to Chicago in 1946, he began his career with the Northern Illinois Gas Company. It was then that he met Evelyn Schwall. He proposed on their first date, and they were married six months later. He and Ev had one child, Pam Farrell of Saratoga, and lost two infant sons, both dying on their first days of life. Hank was one of the good guys. He loved his only child (Pam Farrell of Saratoga) to bits, and entered into his true calling as "Popa" when his grandchildren Josh and Molly were born. He was just simply the world's best grandfather, spending every minute he could playing, telling stories of Hansi and Fritzi the Magic Pigs, and reading with the kids. When his great-grandchildren (Liam, Nolan and Quinn) were born, he saw it as a chance to do it all over again. After retiring from the gas company, he perfected his golf game, took up woodcarving and baking, and caught a jillion fish. In 1999, Hank and Ev moved to Prestwick Chase in Saratoga. Through 66 years of marriage, he and Ev were inseparable, right up to sharing the same room at Wesley for the past year. They were still holding hands - literally - when Hank died Wednesday. Hank's survivors include his wife Evelyn; Pamela Anne Meindl Farrell and her husband Dick; Molly Farrell of Worcester, MA, and Josh Farrell and his wife Kitren along with their sons Liam, Nolan and Quinn, also of Worcester. Relatives and friends may call from 10am to 11am Monday, April 1, 2013 at the Church of St. Peter, 241 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, followed immediately by a Mass of Christian Burial at the church. Hank will be buried at a later date with his fellow veterans at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. As Hank's family, we would like to express our enormous gratitude to the staff on 3rd Floor Springs at Wesley for their never-ending kindness, especially during Hank's last days. You guys are wonderful. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Wesley Health Care Center, 131 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY, 12866 or Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 would be appreciated.
