Ballston Spa, NY - HILDEGARDE MARGARET JANOWSKI LINDQUIST born in Chicago on November 12, 1921 was the daughter of Alma Prohl Janowski and Stanley Janowski. She lived her childhood in Des Plaines, Illinois, and later moved to Loretta, Wisconsin. Hilde attended Eau Claire Normal School, now Wisconsin State Teachers College, earning a BS in Education with honors in1942. She was a member of Amphictyon and Kappa Delta Pi. After graduating, she taught first and second grades in Elk Mound and Janesville, Wisconsin. Hilde moved to Flushing, New York, and married John C. Lindquist in 1947, a union which lasted for close to 66 years. They had two children, Suzanne and Christopher. The family moved to their first home in Hicksville, Long Island, in 1953, living there until 1971. During these years, she taught kindergarten at Burns Avenue and Woodland Avenue Schools. Hilde was involved in many activities outside of school. She mastered knitting, crocheting, embroidary, cross stitch, ceramics, and rug hooking. She was an avid gardener and an excellent seamstress. She and Jack were active in Trinity Lutheran Church. Hilde and Jack became accomplished square dancers, founded their own club and were active Squampers. Hilde made her own fabulous dance dresses and special square dance shirts for Jack. In 1971, Hilde retired from teaching and Jack retired from the NYC Police Department. Then they moved to Johnsburg, NY, where they maintained acres of land including a huge vegetable garden, a raspberry patch, and many gorgeous flower gardens. She became an active member of the local garden club, winning many blue ribbons for her flower arrangements. She also was a member of Home Crafters where she continued her passion for teaching by sharing her craft skills with others. It was at this time that Hilde took up quilting. She made many amazing handmade quilts. Every new pattern became a challenge she met with perfection. She continued designing and hooking rugs with wool fabric that she collected from many places and often dyed herself for the exact colors. Hilde learned how to spin her own yarn, on handmade spinning wheels, and knitted sweaters and afghans. She and Jack moved to Janesville, Wisconsin, in 1990, to be closer to her daughter and brothers. While living there she taught others quilting and was an active guild member. They remained there until 1998 when they returned to New York settling in Ballston Spa, two miles from their son. Preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, William and Stanley and her sister-in law, Marion, she joined heaven's angels on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, following a long battle with heart problems. Hilde is survived by her husband John; two children, Suzanne Swenson and Christopher; her daughter-in-law, Lynne; one brother, Robert; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Hilde was a loving wife, mother, and friend who gave so much to so many and will be sorely missed.
