Rochester, NY- Irene M. Root, 87, passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at the Episcopal Church Home in Rochester, NY after a long illness.

Born in Tupper Lake, NY, she was the daughter of the late, Leo J. and Clara M. (Dumoulin) Sarazen.

Irene was an elementary school teacher at Division Street School in Saratoga Springs for many years, she has since been enjoying her retirement over the last twenty one years. Her passion was teaching but she also enjoyed volunteering at Birthright, reading, playing piano, watching Syracuse basketball games on TV and bowling.

In addition to her parents, Irene is predeceased by her husband, William K. Root; her sister, Rita Garrelts; and her brother in law, Lural Garrelts.

Survivors include her children, Kimberly A. Root, Pamela (Richard) Brewer, Stephanie Knobel, William K. (Kathleen) Root, Anne (Francis) Gallese, Catherine (Doug) Holden, Scott (Seana) Root, Matthew (Johanna) Root; her brothers, Richard (June) Sarazen and Leo (Elaine) Sarazen; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Benjamin) Brannin, Ashlee Brewer, Michael (Ann) Knobel, Jessica Knobel, Katie Holden, Lauren DePoint, Matthew Holden, Jacob DePoint, Brian Root, Kerry Root, Madeline Root, Andrew Root, Chase Root, Rowan Root and Henry Root; her great grandchildren, William Brannin, Julianne Brannin, Harrison Brannin, Amelia Brannin, Lena Holden and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to call from 4-7 pm on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at the William J. Burke & Sons/ Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Home, 628 N. Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 am on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at St. Mary's Church, 167 Milton Ave. Ballston Spa, NY 12020. Burial will be at St. Alphonsus Cemetery, Tupper Lake, NY at a date in the future.

The family would like to thank all the staff at the Episcopal Church Home as well as Lifetime Care Hospice in Rochester, NY for the compassionate quality care they provided mom.
