Obituary

Irving James Boyle, 94, died on Thursday, May 24, 2018, at Wesley Health Care Center.  Born on April 29, 1924, in Wingham, Ontario, Canada, he was the son of the late William George Boyle and Edna Finley Boyle.  He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Eleanor Goetschius Boyle.

In 1943, Irv enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving around the world as a boatswain's mate.  He saw World War II end while stationed in the Philippines and was discharged in 1946.  Upon his return to the United States, Irv lived with his aunt and uncle in Mount Vernon, NY, while attending New York University.  In 1948, he acquired his U.S. Citizenship.

Irv's career with the J.J. Newberry Company brought him and his young family to

Saratoga Springs, NY, in 1957.  He later became employed by G. F. Blackmer & Son,

which enabled him and his family to stay in his beloved Saratoga Springs.  As an enthusiastic supporter of the community, he was a longtime member of the Saratoga Springs Lions Club and the Saratoga Wilton Elks Lodge #161.

Irv was an avid outdoorsman which began in his Wingham childhood skiing to

school over snow-covered fields.  He enjoyed hunting as part of a private club in Indian

Lake and camping, skiing, snowshoeing, paddling, hiking, and biking with his family and friends.  The trails around Lake Desolation were favorites that he enjoyed

sharing with others. Irv was a member of the Adirondack Mountain Club and the

Friends of the Kayaderosseras, but it was the Crooked Canes, a weekly outdoor group for retirees, that he was most fond of, rarely missing a Thursday.

Over the years, Irv and Eleanor traveled extensively throughout the United States and

Canada.  They also toured the British Isles and many countries in Europe.

Irv was predeceased by his brother, George Boyle.  In addition to his wife, he is

survived by his daughters, Carolyn Boyle McLoughlin of Averill Park and Virginia

(William) Boyle Traver of Albany.  He leaves six grandchildren, Daniel (Caroline) Padgett, Emily (Louis) Martin, Matthew McLoughlin, Colleen (Michael)

Mason, Thomas (Marliese) Traver, Meredith (Brian) Ferrel, and seven great-

grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Boyle Yake of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Friends and family are invited to call at William J. Burke & Sons, Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Home, 628 North Broadway (518-584-5373) on Wednesday, May 30th, from 11:00am-12 noon with a funeral service to follow at noon.  Interment will follow at the Saratoga National Cemetery.  Gifts made in Irving's memory may be sent to the National Park Foundation, 1110 Vermont Ave., NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC 20005 (www.nationalparks.org), or the charity of one's choice.
