Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Jack Lewis Ellsworth, 88, a lifelong resident of Saratoga Springs died peacefully January 2, 2013 at Wesley Nursing Home surrounded by his wife and children. Born on August 25, 1924, he was the son of the late Ray and Genevieve (Geil) Ellsworth. He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Gail Dantz Ellsworth; brother, Robert Geil Ellsworth and a son, William Lewis Ellsworth. Survivors include his wife, MIriam Phelps Ellsworth; his sister Audrey Maehl of Santa Fe, NM; sons, Jay (Jeanette) of Middle Grove, Philip and Bart of Wilton and daughters, Judi Ash (Jim) and Carol Blowers of Burnt Hills; twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. Jack graduated from Saratoga Springs High School in 1943 and immediately enlisted in the U. S. Army as a Medic. After completing Basic training he married Gail Dantz and then was deployed to the Pacific Sector where he participated in the invasion of Leyte and served in the Philippines' with distinction until the war ended. For much of his life Jack worked as a printer/stereotyper for The Saratogian, Times Union, The Post Star and The Schenectady Gazette. He and his wife Miriam established The Greenfield Press in 1985 and finally retired in the early 1990's. Family, friends, his church and community service were most important to Jack. Jack believed in giving back to his community, to those who may need a helping hand and instilled that value in his children. From the time he was a little boy, he was an active member of the Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church. As an adult he taught Sunday School classes, served as an advisor to youth groups and church sponsored Boy Scout troops, served on numerous church boards and even cooked and served for church dinners. For those who knew him best, the fact that he cooked may come as somewhat of a shock. Later in life he gave the same energetic service to the Middle Grove United Methodist Church. Jack was a leader in Saratoga County 4H clubs and YMCA and was a past member of the Greenfield Fire District. Relatives and friends may call from 2pm to 4pm Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013 at the Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church, 175 Fifth Avenue and Henning Road, followed by a memorial service at 4pm. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Northeastern NY, Pine West Plaza, Building 4 Suite 405, Washington Ave. Ext., Albany, NY 12205 or the Middle Grove Fire Department, 25 North Creek Road, Middle Grove NY 12850.
